Abstract

Abstract A tester (10) for multiple types of radios (34) has a first group of generic test elements (14) common to all types of radios to be tested and second groups of test elements (12) specific to each one of the multiple types of radios (34). Each of the second groups of test elements (12) is mounted within a pluggable module (12) for insertion into the tester (10) where it couples to a common bus (16) accessed by all of the other test elements (12, 14) and by the controlling computer (18). Each pluggable module (12) contains a specific identifier which, when accessed (284) by the controlling computer (18) initiates a stored program (288) which causes the computer (18), via the bus (16), to couple the various test elements (12, 14) into a configuration required to test the radio type (34) associated with that identifier. The tester (10) is very compact and conveniently uses a lap top computer (18) as the controlling element.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 123 words
A computer controlled radio tester (10) for multiple types of radios (34), said tester (10) comprising, a bus, (16) a controlling computer (18), a first group of generic test elements (14) common to some or all of said multiple types of radios (34) to be tested and a second group of test elements (12) mounted within a module which is user insertable into a plug (31) contained within said tester (10), said second group of test elements (12) being specific to one of said multiple types of radios (34), said first and second groups of test elements (14, 12) being coupled to said bus (16) in a variable manner determined by means of a radio type identifier available to the controlling computer (18).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 44 words
The tester of claim 1 wherein the controlling computer (18) is programmable and wherein actions of the test elements (14, 12) are controlled through the bus (16) by said controlling computer (18) operating under a stored program retrieved based on the radio type identifier.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
The tester of claim 1 wherein the radio typr identifier is contained within the pluggable module.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 66 words
The test set of claim 1 wherein the controlling computer (18) uses the radio type identifier to access a program stored in memory (22) accessible to the computer (18), said program causing test elements (14, 12) required to test the said one of said multiple types of radios (34) to be electrically coupled to the bus (16) in a manner suitable for testing such radio (34).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 59 words
The test set of claim 4 wherein the controlling computer (18) uses the radio type identifier to access a program stored in memory (22) accessible to the computer, said program causing test elements (14, 12) required to test said one of said multiple types of radios (34) to be initialized in a manner suitable for testing such radio (34).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 81 words
The test set of claim 1 wherein the controlling computer (18) uses the radio type identifier to access a program stored in memory (22) accessible to the computer (18), said program causing test elements (14, 12) required to test said one of said multiple types of radios (34) to be coupled to the bus in a manner such that signals originating within the first group of elements (14) pass via the bus to members of the second group of elements (12).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
The tester of claim 1 wherein the second group of test elements (12) comprise at least a modulator (90) and a demodulator (80).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 18 words
The tester of claim 1 wherein the second group of elements (12) comprise a bus programming element (180).
Claim 9
Independent Claim 253 words
A method for operating a computer controlled radio tester (10) for multiple types of radios (34), wherein said tester (10) has a first group of multiple controllable test elements (14) coupled to the computer (18) and to each other by a multiport bus (16) and a second group of multiple test elements (12) able to be coupled to said multiport bus by provision of a personality module (12) containing one or more of said second group of test elements (12), wherein the first group of test elements (14) provides generic test functions and the second group of test elements (12) provides test functions specific to one or more of said multiple types of radios (34), said method comprising the steps of: coupling a first personality module (12) having test elements of said second group (12) specifically adapted for testing a first of said multiple types of radios (34) to said bus (16); causing (282, 284) said computer (18) to interrogate said first personality module (12) and determine therefrom an index; retrieving (286) a first test configuration program available to said computer (18) using said index; executing (288) said first test configuration program to cause said computer to couple particular members of said first group of test elements (14) and particular members of said second group of test elements (12) contained in said first personality module (12) into a first test configuration suitable for testing said first of said multiple types of radios (34); and testing (300) said radio using said first test configuration.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 9 wherein said method comprises retrieving (298) based on said index, a test sequence operable by said test configuration for testing said radio (34).
