A method of over-the-air remote-controlled programming of a dedicated calling number that is associated with one of a plurality of dedicated calling buttons (24, 26, 28) of a subscriber unit (22) in a cellular telephone system: (a) initiating (1003) an outgoing cellular communication to a cellular programming center through the cellular telephone system by activating at least one of the plurality of dedicating calling buttons (24, 26, 28) of the subscriber unit (22); (b) initiating (1009) a programming mode from the subscriber unit (22) by activating at least one of the plurality of dedicated calling buttons (24, 26, 28); (c) transmitting (1013) a program-initiation signal from the subscriber unit (22) to the cellular programming center in response to the initiating step (b); (d) receiving (1023) from the cellular programming center, a program-mode signal in response to the transmitting step (c); (e) receiving (1027) from the cellular programming center a first dedicated calling number to be programmed; and (f) programming (1037) the first dedicated calling number into a memory (66) within the subscriber unit (22), and associating the first dedicated calling number with one of the dedicated calling buttons; whereby the subscriber unit (22) is programmed with the first dedicated calling number.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
40 words
The method of over-the-air remote-controlled programming of Claim 1 wherein: step (d) includes transmitting (1025) from the subscriber unit (22) an acknowledge signal that indicates to the cellular programming center that the subscriber unit (22) is in the programming mode.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
41 words
The method of over-the-air remote-controlled programming of Claim 1 wherein: step (e) includes transmitting (1035) the dedicated calling number to the cellular programming center, and verifying at the cellular programming center that the dedicated calling number does not contain an error.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
39 words
The method of over-the-air remote-controlled programming of Claim 1 wherein: step (e) includes receiving (1027) from the cellular programming center the first dedicated calling number, wherein the first dedicated calling number is received as a series of DTMF tones.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
36 words
The method of over-the-air remote-controlled programming of Claim 1 wherein: step (d) includes receiving (1023) from the cellular programming center, the program-mode signal wherein the program-mode signal is a sequence of one or more DTMF tones.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
40 words
The method of over-the-air remote-controlled activation of Claim 1 wherein: step (c) includes transmitting (1025) from the subscriber unit (22) an acknowledge signal that indicates to the cellular programming center that the subscriber unit (22) is in the programming mode.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
51 words
The method of over-the-air remote-controlled programming of Claim 1 wherein: step (d) includes transmitting (1035) the mobile identification number and the system identification number to the cellular programming center, and verifying at the cellular programming center that the mobile identification number and the system identification number do not contain an error.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
116 words
A method of over-the-air remote-controlled programming of a subscriber unit (22) in a cellular telephone system, said method including: (a) initiating (1003) an outgoing cellular communication to a cellular programming center through the cellular telephone system using an unrestricted telephone number; (b) transmitting (1013) a program-initiation signal from the subscriber unit to the cellular programming center in response to the initiating step (a); (c) receiving (1023) from the cellular programming center, a program-mode signal in response to the transmitting step (b); (d) receiving (1027) from the cellular programming center the mobile communications parameter; and (e) programming (1037) the mobile communications parameter into a memory within the subscriber unit (22); whereby the subscriber unit (22) is programmed.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
37 words
The method of over-the-air remote-controlled programming of Claim 8, wherein: step (d) includes receiving (1027) from the cellular programming center the mobile communications parameter, wherein the mobile communications parameter is received as a series of DTMF tones.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
200 words
A cellular telephone system operable in conjunction with a cellular mobile telephone switching office (30), the system including a subscriber unit (22) comprising: a cellular transceiver (60) capable of remote operation in conjunction with the mobile telephone switching office (30); a microphone (70) connected to the cellular transceiver (60); a speaker (72) connected to the cellular transceiver (60); an antenna (62) through which the transceiver (60) transmits signals to, and receives signals from, the mobile telephone switching office (30); a memory (66) that stores a mobile identification number and a system identification number for the cellular transceiver, programming means for programming the mobile identification number and the system identification number that are stored in the memory (66), wherein the programming means includes: initiating means (24, 26, 28) for initiating a programming mode between the subscriber unit (22) and a cellular programming center, and sending/receiving means (60) for transmitting from the cellular programming center to the subscriber unit (22) the mobile identification number and the station identification number to be programmed for the cellular transceiver (60); and means for providing (78) the mobile identification number and the system identification number to the cellular transceiver (60) to activate the cellular transceiver (60).
