Abstract

Abstract Safety element (16) intended to assure in time the electric reliability of pulse transmitting leads (12), comprised in apparatus for the electric stimulation of the heart (pacemaker 10) and consisting of a main metallic coil (13) of tubular structure delimiting an inner bore, covered by an insulating sheath (14), which safety element (16) comprises a flexible lead formed by one or more wires coiled in tight turns or intertwined and provided with a rounded head for making it easier the introduction of the safety element in the bore of the main metal coil of the pulse transmitting lead.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 281 words
Apparatus for the assisted heart stimulation of patients suffering from no or insufficient natural stimulation, comprising a pacemaker or PM (10), received in a subcutaneous pocket formed in the patient's chest, that generates the stimulation pulses and a pulse transmitting lead (12) forwarding said pulses to the patient's heart, provided with a pin-jack (11) for connection to the PM and a distal end (18) to be fixed to the endocardium of the right ventricule of said heart (HT) for transmitting thereto said stimulation pulses, wherein said pulse transmitting lead (12) has a coaxial, tubular structure consisting of an outer sheath (14) and an inner "main" coil (13) formed by one or more wires helically wound in closely tight turns, delimiting an inner cylindrical cavity or bore (15) which bore, during first implantation of said pulse transmitting lead (12) in the patient's body, accomodates a thin, solid wire, called mandrel (MN) that awards said pulse transmitting lead (12) the rigidity necessary to allow the latter to be pushed from said subcutaneous pocket until the patient's heart (HT), wherein said distal end is fixed to the heart's right ventricule, being said mandrel (MN) removed when said implantation is completed, characterized in that said device comprises also an additional safety element (16, 116) to be utilized at the time of the necessary replacement of said PM, comprising one or more very flexible wires aptly intertwined to form a cylindrical body and so sized to be fitted in said inner bore (15) of said main coil (13) and in contact with the inner surface thereof capable to permanently assure the electric continuity of said pulse transmittal lead even if cracks or micro-fractures have occurred therein.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 47 words
The additional element (16) of claim 1 to be utilized in association with said pulse transmitting lead (12) and to be fitted in said bore (15) of said main coil (13), consisting of one or more wires helically wound in tight turns to form a coil (16).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
The additional element (116) of claim 1 cosisting of several very thin wires so intertwined to form a "tress" of flexible structure.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
The additional element (16, 116) of claim 1, provided with a rounded head (19, 119) to facilitate the introduction of said element (16, 116) in the bore (15) of said main coil (13).
