Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to a atherectomy device (11) comprising a relatively rigid housing (12) disposed at the distal end of a flexible guide (36). The housing (12) is formed of a cut-out (14) extending longitudinally of the housing (12) on one side thereof. An atheroma cutter (31) is disposed within the housing (12) and can be rotated and moved past the cut-out (14). An inflatable balloon (67) is provided on the exterior of the housing (12) and can be inflated to urge the housing (12) in the direction of the cut- out (14) to securely position the device (11) in a blood vessel.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 161 words
An atherectomy device (11) comprising a flexible member (36) having proximate and distal ends; a relatively rigid housing (12) disposed at the distal end of the flexible member (36), said housing (12) having a rounded distal end portion (26) and a cut-out (14) on one side thereof; cutting means (31) disposed within the housing (12); flexible drive means (41) for translating the cutting means (31) relative to the housing (12) so that said cutting means (31) will move past the cut-out (14) in the housing (12); motive means (51,52) for rotating the cutter (31); and flexible guiding means (36) on the housing (12); characterised in that means (66) are provided on the housing (12) for urging the housing (12) in a direction extending laterally of the housing from the cut- out (14) when the housing (12) is in a blood vessel for the cutting means (31) to act on material to one side of the blood vessel facing said cut-out (14).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 161 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 46 words
An atherectomy device (11) as claimed in claim 1 characterised in that said urging means (66) is situated on the opposite side of the housing (12) to the cut-out (14) to act on the opposite side of the blood vessel to that facing the cut-out (14).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 40 words
An atherectomy device as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 characterised in that said urging means (66) comprises an inflatable device to displace the housing (12) as the device inflates and engages the adjacent side of the blood vessel.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
An atherectomy device as claimed in claim 2 characterised in that the inflatable device comprises an inflatable balloon (67).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 32 words
An atherectomy device (11) as claimed in claim 4 characterised in that the balloon (67) is integral with a flexible tubular member (77) having a lumen which opens into the balloon (67).
