Abstract
Abstract A switching boost regulator (L1,Q1,D1), including auxiliary circuitry (L2,Q2,D2) having an auxiliary switch (Q2) and inductor (L2) connected to operate the regulator in a zero-voltage transition mode, achieves substantial efficiency improvement by limiting losses in the auxiliary circuitry dedicated to achieving zero-voltage transition operation. Loss reduction circuitry (D3,T2,D4,R2) included with the auxiliary circuitry cooperatively operates to limit turn-on and conduction losses and to suppress ringing of the components of the auxiliary circuit.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
139 words
A boost converter including an energy storage inductor (L1), a rectifying diode (D1) coupling the inductor to an output and a power switch (Q1) for controlling energy storage in the inductor; circuitry for enabling the power switch to operate with zero voltage switching; including; a network (Q2, D5, L2) activated by an auxiliary switch (Q2) for driving a terminal of the power switch to a substantially zero voltage at a conduction transition of of the power switch; CHARCTERIZED BY: circuitry for limiting losses incurred in the network including; clamping circuitry (D3) for limiting a voltage at a terminal of the auxiliary switch; and a first and second magnetically coupled winding (T2) with the first winding connected in series with the auxiliary switch; and discharge circuitry (D4, R2) for discharging magnetic energy of the first and second magnetically coupled windings.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
36 words
A boost converter as claimed in claim 1; wherein: the clamping circuitry includes a diode (D3) and the circuitry for limiting losses includes a diode-resistive network (Q4, R2) connected to limit reverse recovery of the diode.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
47 words
A boost converter as claimed in claim 2; wherein: a resistive device (R2) of the diode resistive network has a resistance value substantially equal to one-half a square root of the ratio of an inductance of the network to a drain source capacitance of the auxiliary switch.
