Claim 1
Independent Claim
142 words
An optical recording apparatus comprising at least one recording medium (1) having a single plate substrate (8) and a recording film (10) thereon capable of producing optically detectable changes, between plural states, due to laser irradiation; means (4) for rotating said recording medium (1); and at least one floating-type optical head (2), which floats on a respective surface of said recording medium (1) so as to maintain a specific distance therefrom, whereby a laser beam irradiates said recording medium (1) when it is rotated, in a fixed direction, by said rotating means (4), characterised in that a plurality (6) of recording media is provided, the recording film (1) being provided on both sides of each recording medium; and that an optically transparent protective layer having a thickness of several hundreds µm at most is formed on the surface of each recording film.
Claim 2

Apparatus according to any of the preceding Claims wherein the surface of each said substrate has a continuous groove, or a row of signal pits arranged along a spiral line to guide said laser beam to a desired position, directions of the spiral lines on upper and lower surfaces of the plurality of recording media being the same respectively, and directions of the spiral lines on said upper and lower surfaces being opposite from each other.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
40 words
Apparatus according to any of the preceding Claims wherein said rotating means (4) provides a constant relative linear velocity to the plurality of recording media with respect to said optical heads (2), regardless of the positions of said optical heads.
Claim 6
