Abstract

Abstract The invention provides for antenna apparatus having antenna members (10,20,22) extending parallel to a ground plane (44), which members are L-shaped and can be provided in advantageously miniaturised form. Two such antenna members (20,22) can be provided on the same ground plane (44) so as to achieve antenna diversity and switch means (30) are provided for switching between the antenna member (20,22) in a receive mode, and for switching to only one of said antenna members (20,22) for operation of the apparatus in a transmit mode. The switch means (30) is arranged to ground a feed connector (18,36,38) of the antenna member (20,22) that is not selected for transmission or reception so as to render that antenna member (20,22) passive.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 65 words
Antenna apparatus comprising an antenna member (10) extending parallel to a ground plane (44), a grounding connector connecting said antenna member (10) to said ground plane (44) and a feed connector (18,36,38) connecting said antenna member (10) to antenna circuitry, characterized in that said antenna member (10) comprises first and second portions (12,14) extending parallel to said plane (44) and forming an L-shaped member (10,20,22).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 17 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 characterized in that said L-shaped member (10,20,22) is formed from a sheet.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 42 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, characterized by two antenna members (20,22) as specified in claim 1 respectively connected by two grounding connectors (32,34) to said ground plane (44), and switch means (30) for switching between said two antenna members (20,22).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
Apparatus according to claim 3, characterized in that said two antenna members (20,22) are mounted on said ground plane (44) such that said first and second portions (12,14) extend in a rectangular manner.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 72 words
Apparatus according to claim 3 or 4, characterized in that both of said antenna members (20,22) are arranged for operation in a receive mode, only one (20) of said antenna members is arranged for operation in a transmit mode and said switch means (30) is provided for switching between the two antenna members (20,22) in the receive mode and for switching to said only one antenna member (20) in said transmit mode.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 30 words
Apparatus according to claim 5, characterized in that said switch means (30) is arranged to switch the antenna member that is not to receive or transmit into a passive state.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
Apparatus according to claim 6, characterized in that said switch means (30) is arranged to selectively ground the feed connectors (36,38) so as to switch said antenna member to a passive state.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 19 words
Apparatus according to claim 5, 6 or 7, characterized in that said switch means (30) comprises a single-pole-double-terminal switch.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 66 words
Apparatus according to any one of claims 5 to 8, characterized in that said switch means (30) is connected to said only one antenna member (20) by way of two series-connected quarter wavelength stubs (64,66) and is arranged to provide a ground connection to the stub (64) connected thereto when a transmitter power stage (28) is to be connected to said only one antenna member (20).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 27 words
Apparatus according to claim 9, characterized in that said power stage (28) is connected between said quarter wavelength stubs (64,66) by way of an impedance transformer (62).
