Abstract

Abstract A connector for optically coupling a fiber optic transmission line and an opto-electronic device (30) electrically interfaced to a substrate (15), includes the opto-electronic device (30) mounted on the substrate (15), such as a printed circuit board, and means (60) for mounting the fiber optic transmission line to the substrate such that the operative axis (z) of the opto-electronic device (30) is substantially not coincidental with the light transmission axis of the fiber optic transmission line. The connector also has light bending means (150) in operative optical association with said opto-electronic device (30) for directing along the light transmission axis (x) of the fiber optic transmission line at least a portion of the light emitted from said opto-electronic device (30) or for directing along the operative axis (z) of said opto-electronic device (30) at least a portion of the light emitted from said fiber optic transmission line (203).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 136 words
A device (10) for coupling a fiber optic transmission line (203) and an opto-electronic device (30) mounted on a substrate (15), characterized in that the said device (10) includes means (50, 60) for mounting the fiber optic transmission line (203) to the substrate (15) such that the operative axis (z) of the opto-electronic device (30) is not coincidental with the light transmission axis (x) of the fiber optic transmission line (203), and light bending means (150) in operative optical association with the opto-electronic device (30) for directing along the light transmission axis of the fiber optic transmission line at least a portion of the light emitted from the opto-electronic device (30) or for directing along the operative axis of the opto-electronic device at least a portion of the light emitted from the fiber optic transmission line.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 13 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said substrate is a printed circuit board.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 17 words
The device of claim 2 wherein said opto-electronic device is surface mounted on said printed circuit board.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
The device of claim 2 wherein the operative axis of the opto-electronic device is substantially normal to the plane of said printed circuit board.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 23 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said means for mounting the fiber optic transmission line to the substrate comprises an optical sleeve (40).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
The device of claim 5 wherein said optical sleeve defines a bore (45) having an axis substantially coincidental with the light transmission axis of the fiber optic transmission line.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 13 words
The device of claim 6 wherein said bore is a substantially cylindrical bore.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 31 words
The device of claim 1 wherein the operative axis of said opto-electronic device substantially intersects the light transmission axis of the fiber optic transmission line at an angle of about 90°.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 31 words
The device of claim 1 wherein the substrate comprises a substantially planar substrate and wherein the operative axis of the opto-electronic device is about normal to the plane of said substrate.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 25 words
The device of claim 9 wherein the light transmission axis of the fiber optic transmission line is substantially parallel to the plane of the substrate.
