Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this invention is to offer an edge connector which requires less space for insertion of a card and has a reduced stress in the housing due to dissipation of mechanical stress. Accordingly, the invention comprises a C-shaped connector 1 having a housing that has a reception groove 8 and guiding grooves 10, 10' for a memory card 100. In the upper walls forming the guiding grooves 10, 10', protrusions 12, 14 are formed. These protrusions match indentations 108, 110 in the memory card. The memory card 100 can be inserted into the guiding grooves 10, 10; only when the protrusions 12, 14 and indentations 108, 110 are properly aligned. After that the memory card is moved along the grooves 10, 10' toward the contacts 70, 70' arranged in the main body 4 of the housing. Contacting arms 78, 78' of adjacent contacts 70, 70' make connection alternately with the conducting pads 106 on the upper surface 111 and lower surface 112 of the memory card 100, thus preventing the concentration of mechanical stress in the housing 2 retaining contacts 70, 70' therein and to the solder connections of the contacts to a circuit board 18.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 137 words
An electrical connector (1) comprising an insulative housing (2) having a reception groove (8) for receiving an edge (102) of a circuit card (100) and electrical contacts (70, 70') secured in slots (22, 24) of the housing (2) including contact sections (78, 78') for electrical connection with conducting pads (106) along the circuit card edge and contact portions (76, 76') for electrical connection to a circuit board (18), characterized in that alternate electrical contacts (70) have said contact sections (78) extending along said slots (22) for electrical connection with the conducting pads (106) on one surface (111) of said circuit card (100) and the other alternate electrical contacts (70') have said contact sections (78') extending along said slots (22) for electrical connection with the conducting pads (106) on the other surface (112) of the circuit card (100).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 30 words
An electrical connector as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said contact sections (78, 78') are contact arms cantilevered from main portions (72, 72') of said contacts (70, 70').
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 28 words
An electrical connector as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said contact arms (78, 78') have curved portions (84, 84') that end with contact members (86, 86').
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 37 words
An electrical connector as claimed in claim 2 or 3, characterized in that mounting bases (74, 74') extend from said main portions (72, 72') and extend into said slots (24) thereby securing said contacts (70, 70') therein.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 74 words
An electrical connector as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that said housing (2) has a main body (4) containing said reception groove (8), and arms (6) having card-receiving grooves (10, 10') therein in alignment with said reception groove (8) so that the circuit card (100) can be moved along the card-receiving grooves (10, 10') into said reception groove (8) and into electrical engagement with the contact sections (78, 78').
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 56 words
An electrical connector as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that said arms (6) have projections (12, 14), and the circuit card (100) has recesses (108, 110) that mate with said projections (12, 14) when the card (100) is inserted into the card-receiving grooves (10, 10') in a direction normal to the card-receiving grooves (10, 10').
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 31 words
An electrical connector as claimed in claim 5 or 6, characterized in that said arms (6) have metal members (20) affixed thereto for attaching the connector to a circuit board (18).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 172 words
An electrical connector (1) comprising an insulative housing (2) having a main body (4) provided with a card-reception groove (8), electrical contacts (70, 70') secured in said main body (4) and having contact sections (78, 78') disposed into said card-reception groove (8) for electrical connection with conducting pads (106) on an edge (102) of a circuit card (100) when the edge (102) is inserted into said card-reception groove (8), and arms (6) extending outwardly from sides of said main body (4) and having card-receiving grooves (10, 10') therein in alignment with said card-reception groove (8) for receiving sides (104, 104') the circuit card (100) so that the circuit card can be moved along said card-receiving grooves (10, 10') into said card-reception groove (8), characterized in that said arms (6) have projections (12, 14) and said circuit card (100) has recesses (108, 110) that mate with said projections (12, 14) when the circuit card (100) is inserted into the card-receiving grooves (10, 10') in a direction normal to the card-receiving grooves (10, 10').
