Abstract

Abstract An inflator, preferably for an automotive gas bag restraint system, containing a plurality of gas generant bodies (1) which have a relatively inert burn inhibitor coating material thereon. The inhibitor material is preferably a plastic resin. The inhibitor material may also be alumina, titania, silica or a silicate compound, e.g. bentonite. The inhibitors are preferably applied to the generant bodies as a spray. The gas generant may be an azide or a non-azide, preferably an azide and most preferably sodium azide. The inhibited bodies may be any shape, preferably washer-shaped discs in side by side array.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 68 words
A gas bag inflator comprising: a combustion chamber having a gas outlet; a plurality of gas generant bodies (1, 6) disposed within said chamber, said generant bodies being coated with a relatively inert burn inhibitor material on at least one side or face (2, 3, 4, 7, 8) thereof; means for igniting the inhibited bodies; and means for routing gas generated from said chamber through the gas outlet.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 16 words
A gas bag inflator according to claim 1 wherein the inhibitor material comprises a plastic resin.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
A gas bag inflator according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the inhibitor coating is applied to the generant bodies by spraying.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 23 words
A gas bag inflator according to any preceding claim wherein the inhibited bodies (1) are wafer-shaped and arranged in side by side relationship.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
A gas bag inflator according to claim 4 wherein the inhibited wafers (1) are individually separated by spacer means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 40 words
A gas bag inflator according to claim 4 or claim 5 wherein the wafers are washer-shaped and the inhibitor coating substantially covers the face of one side (2) and the inner (4) and outer (3) peripheral walls of each wafer.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
A gas bag inflator according to any preceding claim wherein the gas generant bodies comprise an azide-based composition.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 14 words
A gas bag inflator according to claim 7 wherein the azide is sodium azide.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 20 words
A gas bag inflator according to any preceding claim including a gas bag deployment means connected to the gas outlet.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 43 words
A method of inflating a gas bag comprising igniting a gas generant body having a relatively inert burn inhibitor material coating at least one face or side (2, 3, 4, 7, 8) thereof, and using the gas generated to inflate the gas bag.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method according to claim 10 wherein the inhibitor material comprises a plastic resin.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method according to claim 10 or claim 11 wherein the inhibitor coating is applied to the generant body as a spray.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 18 words
A method according to any one of claims 10 to 12 wherein the inhibited body (1) is wafer-shaped.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 22 words
A method according to any one of claims 10 to 13 wherein the gas generant body (1, 6) comprises an azide-based composition.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 12 words
A method according to claim 14 wherein the azide is sodium azide.
