Abstract

Abstract A method and system are disclosed which may be utilized to generate within a data processing system a simultaneous visual presentation of data within multiple windows supported by different graphic user interfaces (120, 140). Each graphic user interface is coupled to a separate display device driver (132, 154). Window movements including: creation; deletion; resizing; translational movement; minimization; maximization; activation; enablement; or an alteration in relative background/foreground order are detected for each graphic user interface and that information and the associated display device driver for each graphic user interface are coupled to a virtual device driver (134) which facilitates interprocess communication between two or more graphic user interfaces, wherein the portion of the video display which is managed by each graphic user interface may be ascertained. Each separate display device driver is then coupled to a single display device, wherein multiple windows supported by different graphic user interfaces may be simultaneously presented.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 124 words
A data processing system having a visual display unit including a visual display screen (104) for permitting simultaneous visual presentation of data within multiple windows supported by different graphic user interfaces (120, 140), said data processing system comprising: a plurality of visual display device drivers (132, 154), each for use by a separate graphic user interface; means for interconnecting (134) said plurality of visual display device drivers (132, 154) wherein the portion of said visual display screen (104) managed by each graphic user interface at a given time may be ascertained; and means for coupling each of said plurality of visual display device drivers (132, 154) to said visual display unit whereby multiple windows supported by different graphic user interfaces may be simultaneously presented.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 34 words
A data processing system according to Claim 1, including window movement detection means (126, 148) coupled to each graphic user interface (120, 140) for detecting movement of each window within said visual display screen.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
A data processing system according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, including a virtual device driver (134) coupled to each of said plurality of visual display device drivers (132, 154) for facilitating interprocess communication therebetween.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
A data processing system according to Claim 3 as dependent on Claim 2, wherein said window movement detection means is coupled to said virtual device driver.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 70 words
A data processing system according to any one of Claims 1 to 4, including: means for establishing a virtual machine within said data processing system in response to a first request for establishment of an application under a selected graphic user interface; and means for establishing a second application within said virtual machine in response to a subsequent request for establishment of an application under said selected graphic user interface.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 124 words
A method in a data processing system having a visual display unit which includes a visual display screen (104) for simultaneously visually presenting data within multiple windows supported by different graphic user interfaces (120, 140), said method comprising the steps of: providing a separate visual display device driver (132, 154) for each graphic user interface (120, 140) for utilizing said visual display screen (104); coupling each of said separate visual display device drivers (132, 154) together and determining the portion of said visual display screen (104) managed by each graphic user interface at a given time; and coupling each of said separate visual display device drivers (132, 154) to said visual display unit to simultaneously present multiple windows supported by different graphic user interfaces.
