Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to a mobile telecommunication system having an auxiliary routing arrangement comprising auxiliary radio channel units and monitoring means. The auxiliary radio channel units are arranged in the base station of the system and the monitoring means are arranged in the mobile telephone switch of the system. The monitoring means monitor the setting-up of each call in the mobile telephone switch and, when faults occur, the monitoring means are adapted to switch off the transmitter function of an affected radio channel unit and to replace the affected radio channel unit with an auxiliary radio channel unit which is allocated a frequency essentially corresponding to the frequency of the affected radio channel unit. The automatic replacement of an affected radio channel unit with an auxiliary radio channel unit ensures that the traffic handling capacity of the system is essentially unchanged. <IMAGE>

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim 206 words
A mobile telecommunication system comprising at least one mobile telephone switch having at least one base station connected thereto, the said at least one base station having at least one radio channel unit associated therewith which is adapted to operate at a frequency that is unique to the said at least one radio channel unit, and at least one mobile telephone unit adapted for radio communication on the said at least one radio channel unit, characterised in that the mobile telecommunication system further comprises at least one auxiliary radio channel unit (6) for the said at least one base station (1) which is adapted for operation at the frequency of operation of the said at least one radio channel unit (4), and means (5) for monitoring the traffic handling capacity of the said at least one radio channel unit (4), for deactivating the said at least one radio channel unit (4) when its traffic handling capacity ceases or falls below a level at which it cannot effect traffic handling for a predetermined period of time (T1), and for activating the said at least one auxiliary radio channel unit (6) to replace, and to operate at the frequency of operation of, the deactivated radio channel unit (4).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 24 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the monitoring means (5) form part of the mobile telephone switch (2).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 175 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, characterised in that the telecommunication system comprises a plurality of base stations (1) connected to the said at least one mobile switch (2), in that each of the base stations (1) is allocated a number of radio frequencies and has a separate radio channel unit (4) for each of the allocated frequencies, each one of the radio channel units (4) being thereby adapted to operate at a different frequency, in that each base station (1) has at least one auxiliary radio channel unit (6) adapted for operation at any one of the allocated radio frequencies of the base station (1), and in that when any one of the radio channel units (4) of a base station (1) is deactivated by the monitoring means (5) the said at least one auxiliary radio channel unit (6) of the base station (1) is activated by the monitoring means (5) to replace, and to operate at the frequency of operation of, the deactivated radio channel unit (4).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 48 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the monitoring means (5) are adapted to switch off the radio transmitter function of a radio channel unit (4) when the channel unit is replaced by an auxiliary radio channel unit (6).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 94 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the monitoring means (5) monitor the setting-up of each call in the said at least one mobile telephone switch (2) and store information concerning the unsuccessful attempts to set-up a call for any one of the radio channel units (4), and in that the stored information is used by the monitoring means (5) to make a determination as to whether or not the radio channel unit (4) concerned should be replaced by an auxiliary radio channel unit (6).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 68 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the said at least one mobile telephone switch (2) is adapted to send a fault message to a central control station when the traffic handling capacity of a radio channel unit (4) ceases or falls below a level at which it cannot effect traffic handling for a predetermined period of time (T1).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 33 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that a deactivated radio channel unit (4) is automatically reactivated when its traffic handling capacity has been restored.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 90 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that a deactivated radio channel unit (4) is automatically reactivated in a predetermined period of time (TO) after its traffic handling capacity has been restored, in that the activation of an auxiliary radio channel unit (6) is effected automatically in a predetermined period of time (T1) after the deactivation of the radio channel unit (4) it is replacing, and in that the said predetermined periods of time (TO, T1) are adjustable within a predetermined range.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 32 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in claim 8, characterised in that the predetermined range within which the said predetermined periods of time (TO, T1) are adjustable is 0 to 60 seconds.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the radio channel units (4, 6) can be activated/deactivated from a central control station.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 26 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in claim 10, characterised in that the central control station effects automatic activation/deactivation of a radio channel unit (4, 6).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 23 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in claim 10, characterised in that the activation/deactivation of a radio channel unit (4) is effected manually.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 59 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the number of auxiliary radio channel units (6) allocated to a base station (1) is in proportion to the capability of the central control station to effect the repair of a radio channel unit (4) which becomes faulty or ceases to handling traffic.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 51 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the number of auxiliary radio channel units (6) allocated to a base station (1) is in proportion to the probability that a radio channel unit (4) will become faulty or will ceases to handle traffic.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 24 words
A mobile telecommunication system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the system is a mobile trunked telecommunication system.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 27 words
