A process for polymerizing ethylene, or copolymerizing ethylene with an alpha olefin having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, which comprises contacting ethylene, or a mixture of ethylene and at least one alpha olefin having 3 to 8 carbon atoms, in an inert liquid hydrocarbon, with a methylene-bridged cyclopentadienyl dicarbollide complex of the formula: [(Cp / )(C₂B₉H₁₁)M]₂-(µ-CH₂) wherein: Cp / is an unsubstituted, alkyl-substituted, or fused ring cyclopentadienyl radical, and M is Ti, Zr or Hf.
