Abstract

Abstract Disclosed is an improved two part floating electric connector which prevents damage to a solder joint and deformation to terminals which are caused in coupling and decoupling conventional floating type connector parts when misalignment is present. The two part floating electric connector (3) includes a housing body (1) molded integrally with a collar (2) and attached together by frangible bridging portions (8). A pair of fitting nails (13) are fixed to the opposite ends of the outer stationary collar (2) so that these nails may prevent the inner floating housing (1) from rising above the outer stationary housing (2) while allowing horizontal floating.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 232 words
A two part floating connector (3) adapted to be mounted on the surface of a printed circuit board, said connector including: a housing (1) having a body with a given perimeter, a plurality of terminal receiving cavities (5) therein open towards the bottom thereof and flanges (12) extending from the bottom perimeter of the body overlying said board; and a plurality of terminals (4) mounted in said cavities (5), each terminal having a board engaging portion (6) for mating with the surface of the board and defining a surface mount connection, a mating portion (7) for making electrical connection with a mating terminal and a flexible portion extending from the bottom of the body and connecting the mating portion to the board engaging portion; the improvement comprising: a collar (2) molded integral with said housing and attached to said housing by frangible bridging portions (8), said collar fixedly mounted on the board engaging portion of the terminals, said collar spaced from the housing perimeter a given distance and including a ledge (16) extending over said housing flange (12) in close proximity so that after said bridging portions (8) are broken said housing can float horizontally no more than said given distance within said collar (2) but not vertically with respect to the board; whereby the horizontally floating housing (1) will not compromise the integrity of the surface mount connection and the terminals.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 40 words
A two part floating connector in claim 1 wherein said collar ledge (16) is in the form of two fitting nails (13) fixedly mounted in said collar (2) each fitting nail having a portion (16) overhanging the housing flange (12).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
A two part floating connector in claim 2 wherein said fitting nails (13) each have at least one mounting leg (14) fixedly held in said collar at a position (9) not overhanging said housing flange.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 258 words
The method of making a two part floating electric connector comprising the steps of: forming a mold of an inner floating housing (1) with a given perimeter and flanges (12) extending from the bottom perimeter of the housing and an outer stationary collar (2) both of which are integrally connected together by frangible bridges (8), said collar spaced from the housing perimeter a given distance and including a ledge 16 extending over said housing flange (12) in close proximity said inner floating housing (1) having terminal cavities (5) laterally arranged at regular intervals P for accommodating contact portions (7) of terminals (4), and said outer stationary collar (2) having tail holding means (19) to hold board engaging portions (6) of the terminals (4); inserting the contact portions (7) of terminals (4) in said terminal cavities (5) and fixing the board engaging portions (6) of terminals (4) by said tail-holding means (19); fixing a pair of nails (13) to the opposite ends of said outer stationary collar (2) to prevent the rise of said flanges (16) and said inner floating housing (1) vertically from the board when the bridges (8) are cut; and cutting said bridges (8) to separate said inner floating housing (1) from said outer stationary collar (2); whereby said inner floating housing (1) can float horizontally no more than said given distance within said outer stationary collar (2) but not vertically with respect to the board so that the horizontally floating housing (1) will not compromise the integrity of the surface mount connection and the terminals.
