Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim
104 words
Electric resistor having a resistor core (3) which is arranged between two contact terminals (1, 2) and contains a material which has PTC behaviour and, below a material-specific temperature, forms at least one electrically conducting path running between the two contact terminals (1, 2), the resistor core (3) additionally containing a material having varistor behaviour, characterized in that the varistor material is connected in parallel with at least one subsection of the at least one electrically conductive path, forming at least one varistor (4), and is brought into intimate electric contact with the part of the PTC material forming the at least one subsection.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
22 words
Resistor according to Claim 1, characterized in that the at least one varistor (4) is contacted with both contact terminals (1, 2).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
66 words
Resistor according to Claim 2, characterized in that the at least one varistor (4) and any further varistors (4) provided in each case contain a sheet-like layer of varistor material, in that the PTC material is in the form of one or more sheet-like layers, and in that layers of varistor material and PTC material are arranged alternately in succession in the form of a stack.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
67 words
Resistor according to Claim 2, characterized in that the at least one varistor (4) and any further varistors (4) provided as well as the PTC material are in each case designed as hollow cylinders or as solid cylinders, and in that at least one varistor (4) and at least one element (5) of PTC material are arranged alternately in succession, forming a tube or a solid cylinder.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
53 words
Resistor according to one of Claims 3 or 4, characterized in that the PTC material is a polymer which is produced by pouring onto a neighbouring varistor (4), forming the intimate electric contacts, and subsequent curing or by laying as a board-like or sheet-like element (5) onto a neighbouring varistor and subsequent hot-pressing.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
45 words
Resistor according to one of Claims 3 or 4, characterized in that the PTC material is a ceramic which is fastened by means of an electrically anisotropically conducting material, such as in particular an elastomer, on a neighbouring varistor (4), forming the intimate electric contact.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
65 words
Resistor according to Claim 1, characterized in that a first varistor (4) is contacted with a first terminal (1) of the two contact terminals (1, 2) and a contact disc (6) and a second varistor (4) is contacted either with two contact discs (6) or one contact disc (6) and a second terminal (2) of the two contact terminals (1, 2) (Figs. 4, 5, 6).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
47 words
Resistor according to Claim 7, characterized in that the first and the second varistor (4) are designed in each case as a circular disc (40), and in that these discs (40) are in each case surrounded by a torus (50) formed from PTC material (Figs. 4, 5).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
44 words
Resistor according to Claim 7, characterized in that the first and the second varistor (4) are designed in each case as tori (41), and in that these tori (41) in each case surround the circular disc (51) formed from the PTC material (Fig. 6).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
46 words
Resistor according to one of Claims 8 or 9, characterized in that the contact discs (6) have holes (7) which are filled with PTC material and by which the discs (51) or tori (50) consisting of the PTC material are connected to one another (Fig. 4).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
49 words
Resistor according to Claim 10, characterized in that the PTC material contains a thermoset or thermoplastic polymer which, after creating a stack containing the contact discs (6) and the first and second varistor (4), is cast or hot-pressed into the stack, forming the tori (50) or the discs (51).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
26 words
Resistor according to one of Claims 8 or 9, characterized in that the tori (50) or discs (51) consisting of PTC material are made of ceramic.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
66 words
Resistor according to Claim 1, characterized in that the at least one varistor (4) is arranged in particle form in the resistor core (3) and, with further varistors (4) provided in particle form in the resistor core (3), forms current paths which percolate locally or completely through the resistor core (3) after reaching the breakdown voltage dependent on the particle size and material composition (Fig. 7).
