Abstract

Abstract For indicating tire inflation and/or vehicle velocity, an array of strain gage sensors installed in a driveway or the like is used to determine the distribution of contact forces along the width of a pneumatic tire. A neural network may be employed to classify the patterns of force sensed in this manner. Additional processing of the data permits vehicle velocity to also be determined.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 79 words
A system for determining the pressure of a pneumatic vehicular tire while mounted on the wheel of a vehicle and/or the velocity of the vehicle, comprising: a. an array of load sensors arranged to provide a pattern of the force distribution data exerted by said tire in contact with said sensors along a line across the width of said tire; and b. a computer which is programmed to determine said tire pressure and/or velocity from said force distribution data.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 79 words
A system for determining the pressure of a pneumatic vehicular tire while mounted on the wheel of a vehicle and/or the velocity of the vehicle, comprising: a. an array of load sensors arranged to provide a pattern of the force distribution data exerted by said tire in contact with said sensors along a line across the width of said tire; and b. a computer which is programmed to determine said tire pressure and/or velocity from said force distribution data.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
A system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said load sensors are strain gages or piezoelectric and/or pie- zoresistance films.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
A system as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein said computer is arranged to filter said force distribution data.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 32 words
A system as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said computer is arranged to decompose said force distribution data into symmetrical and unsymmetrical parts in order to determine measures of tire pressure.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 27 words
A system as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein said computer is arranged to use said force distribution data to determine a mean contact pressure.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 21 words
A system as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said computer is arranged to determine tire pressure by neural network recognition.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
A system as claimed in claim 6, wherein said neural network is arranged to be trained on inputs that are insensitive to the position of tire on said sensors.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 26 words
A system as claimed in claim 7, wherein said neural network is arranged to be trained on pseudopressure, summation of forces, midpoint pressure, and force-width data.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 30 words
A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein differences in the pattern of forces are used to indicate differences in the inflation pressure of tires.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 69 words
A method of determining the pressure of a pneumatic vehicular tire while mounted on the wheel of a vehicle and/or the velocity of the vehicle, comprising: a. providing a pattern of the force distribution data exerted by the tire in contact with an array of load sensors along a line across the width of said tire; and b. determining said tire pressure and/or velocity from said force distribution data.
