Abstract

Abstract Communications apparatus is provided for communication in a time division multiplex communication system having at least one primary station and a plurality of remote units. Means are provided for vocoding speech at a first rate and communication with a first remote unit through a first subset of time-slots (sub-slot 5, sub-slot 6) in a given set of time-slots (sub-slots 1 - 8). Means are also provided for vocoding speech at a second, higher, rate and communicating with a second remote unit through a second sub-set of timeslots (sub-slots 1 - 4). The second sub-set comprises more time-slots than the first sub-set.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 101 words
Communication apparatus for communication in a time division multiplex communication system having at least one primary station (102) and a plurality of remote units (104, 106, 108), comprising means for vocoding speech at a first rate and communicating with a first remote unit through a first subset of time slots in a given set of time slots, characterised by means for vocoding speech at a second, higher, rate and communicating with a second remote unit through a second subset of time slots in such a set of time slots, wherein the second subset comprises more time slots than the first subset.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 68 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 comprising: first means for communicating, through a first subset of time slots in a given set of time slots, speech vocoded at said first rate; characterised by second means for communicating, through a second subset of time slots in a given set of time slots, speech vocoded at said second, higher, rate and means (402) for selecting between said first and second means.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 45 words
Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said means for selecting comprises means for receiving an information signal (310) from the primary station, informing the apparatus to receive, through a first or second subset of time slots, speech vocoded at the lower or higher rate respectively.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 37 words
Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a memory for storing time slot assignment information and means for receiving time slot assignment information from the primary station and storing it in the memory.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 40 words
Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising a vo-coder for analysing and vo-coding speech, and a controller (402) for routing the vo-coded speech to a transmit buffer (408) at a coding rate selected by the controller (402).
Claim 6
Independent Claim 102 words
A method of controlling a communication device for communication in a time division multiplex communication system having at least one primary station (102) and a plurality of remote units (104, 106, 108), comprising vocoding speech at a first rate and communicating with a first remote unit through a first subset of time slots in a given set of time slots, characterised by vocoding speech at a second, higher, rate and communicating with a second remote unit through a second subset of time slots in such a set of time slots, wherein the second subset comprises more time slots than the first subset.
