Abstract
Abstract A multimedia communication apparatus can perform communication while multiplexing multimedia information comprising voice information, video information, data and the like. If the transmission rate of video information in a first channel is greater than a predetermined value, a new additional channel is not connected even if a plurality of channels are connectable. It is thereby possible to automatically set the minimum number of channels necessary for the communication of video information, and to prevent setting of an unnecessary additional channel.

A multimedia communication apparatus, comprising: data communication means for communicating first and second data comprising different respective kinds of data; determination means for determining a communicatable communication mode from a capability of a communication partner's apparatus and a capability of said apparatus itself; setting means for setting a first channel and optionally a second channel between said apparatus itself and the communication partner's apparatus according to a result of the determination of said determination means; and comparison means for obtaining a transmission rate allocatable to said first data within the first channel and comparing the obtained transmission rate with a predetermined value, wherein said setting means does not set the second channel even if the second channel is settable when the transmission rate is greater than the predetermined value.
