Abstract
Abstract A method is offered of logically sharing communication resources among cells (51, 52 and 53) within a cellular system (50). The shared communication resources may be time slots in a TDM based system. The communication resources may be shared among a number of cells served by the same controller. The logical sharing of communication resources ensures that the shared resource is in proportion to the communication need.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
65 words
In a cellular communication system wherein communicated signals are exchanged between base sites and communication units on logical channels, a device for sharing logical channels among cells, such device comprising: A) means for detecting a need for a shared logical channel at a requesting cell by a controller, and B) means for exclusively allocating the shared logical channel to a requesting cell by a controller.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
32 words
The device as in claim 1 wherein the means for exclusively allocating a shared logical channel further includes means for identifying a plurality of cells among which to share the logical channel.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
36 words
The device as in claim 2 further including means for receiving a resource request from an identified cell of the plurality of cells and allocating the shared logical channel in response to the received resource request.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
24 words
The device as in claim 3 wherein the means for receiving the resource request further includes means for classifying the type of resource request.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
26 words
The device as in claim 4 further including means for classifying the resource request as a request for a control resource and allocating a control resource.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
26 words
The device as in claim 4 further including means for classifying the resource request as a request for a communication resource and allocating a communication resource.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
28 words
The device as in claim 1 further including means for exchanging a communicated signal between a base site and a communication unit on the allocated, shared communication resource.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
17 words
The device as in claim 7 further including means for detecting the end of the communicated signal.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
22 words
The device as in claim 8 further including means for de-allocating the shared resource upon detecting the end of the communicated signal.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
64 words
In a cellular communication system wherein communicated signals are exchanged between base sites and communication units on logical channels, a method of sharing logical channels among cells, such method including the steps of: A) detecting a need for a shared logical channel at a requesting cell by a controller, and B) exclusively allocating the shared logical channel to the requesting cell by the controller.
