Abstract

Abstract To increase the efficiency of personnel conducting inventory management operations, including data entry of products and information as to their absence, presence or location, the user is provided with a headset having a band extending around the head from which a microphone projects and also on which a bar code reader is located, preferably on the portion of the band which extends around the top of the head of the user. Electronics for processing signals from the microphone and from the reader and for operating a display to indicate either visually or audibly the codes which are read by the reader or are entered by pronouncing the names of alphanumeric characters is also mounted on the headset. The electronics includes a microprocessor and a speech recognition unit which translates the names and words into data stored in the memory associated with the microprocessor. This data can be read out into the visual or audible display (earphones in the headset providing the audible display or a heads up display on a screen in the field of view of the user). The data may also be transmitted to a remote location via a modem and transmitter. A transceiver may be associated with the modem for receiving instructions which are applied as digital data to the microprocessor and used to operate the display. The messages may also be preset messages which are contained in the memory associated with the microprocessor and read out into the display upon the pronouncement of voice commands by the user. The commands also actuate the code reader. The user, therefore, has his or her hands free for conducting inventory management operations including picking and placing of products as well as entry of product data either by optical code reading or by pronouncement of characters which are printed on the products.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 66 words
A portable transaction terminal which does not require manual keyboard or code reader actuation said terminal comprising a headset (10), an optical code reader (24) on said headset for scanning a code symbol when actuated, and voice operated means (40) for entering transaction data and for actuating said code reader to enter data corresponding to the codes scanned by said reader also carried on said headset.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 25 words
Terminal according to Claim 1 further comprising means (44) for transmitting messages for the user of said terminal to said headset from a remote location.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 55 words
The terminal according to Claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said headset (10) has a band (12) worn about the head of the user extending around the top of the head, said code reader (24) being attached to said band and having a port through which a beam of light which scans said code projects.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 64 words
The terminal according to Claim 3 further comprising, an arm (22) attached to said band (12) where it extends around the top of the head, a transparent screen (34) depending from said arm across a field of view of the user, and means (38, 41) for displaying the code read by said reader and transaction data on said screen for viewing by the user.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
The terminal according to Claim 4 further comprising means on said headset for applying messages transmitted from a remote location to said displaying means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
The terminal according to any of claims 3 through 5 wherein said code reader (24) is attached to said band (12) by being mounted on said arm (22).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 113 words
The terminal according to any of the preceding claims wherein said voice operated means comprises a microprocessor (54), a microphone (28) carried by said headset (10), means (60) for recognizing sounds pronounced by the user and received by said microphone for applying codes corresponding thereto to said microprocessor (54), means for applying electrical signals corresponding to said codes scanned by said code reader (24) to said microprocessor (54), means for applying signals from said microprocessor (54) to said code reader (24) for actuating said code reader when a certain one of said codes is applied to said microprocessor, and memory means (56) associated with said microprocessor for storing data corresponding to said codes.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
The terminal according to Claim 7 further comprising means (58,20) operated by said microprocessor for translating such stored codes into messages for the user of said headset.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 62 words
The terminal according to Claim 8 wherein said message translating means comprises at least one earphone (20) on said headset (10) disposed in the vicinity of an ear of the user when wearing the headset, speech synthesizer means (58) connected to said earphone, and means for applying said codes entered into said memory means to said speech synthesizer means via said microprocessor.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 52 words
The terminal according to Claim 8 or Claim 9 wherein said message translating means comprises optical display means (38) including a screen (34) disposed in the field of view of the user, and means for applying said codes entered into said memory means (56) to said display means (38) via said microprocessor.
