Abstract

Abstract A a helmet mounted display including a visor (14) attached to the helmet (10) and having a partially reflecting semi-transparent portion (16) in the view of the wearer and an optical projector (18) for projecting an image onto the semi-transparent portion. The semi-transparent portion has a relatively higher reflectivity in a central area thereof and a relatively lower transparency in an annular area outside the central area. In one aspect of the invention, the heads-up display includes a projector having an image-forming surface whereon an image is formed and an optical system for focusing the image at separate sagittal and tangential foci between the image-forming surface and the semi-transparent portion.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 63 words
A helmet mounted display comprising: a visor attached to the helmet and having a partially reflecting semi-transparent portion in the view of the wearer; and an optical projector for projecting an image onto the semi-transparent portion, wherein the semi-transparent portion has a relatively higher reflectivity in a central area thereof and a relatively lower transparency in an annular area outside the central area.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 21 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the reflectivity of the annular area decreases as the distance from the central area increases.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims wherein the annular area intersects an angle of at least about 25 mrad when viewed by the wearer of the helmet.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the annular area intersects an angle of at least about 50 mrad when viewed by the wearer of the helmet.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the annular area intersects an angle of at least 100 mrad when viewed by the wearer of the helmet.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 54 words
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims and including an optical projector for projecting an image onto the semi-transparent portion including: an image forming surface whereon an image is formed; and an optical system for focusing the image at separate sagittal and tangential foci between the image forming surface and the semi-transparent portion.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 53 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 1-5 and including an optical projector for projecting an image onto the semi-transparent portion including: an image forming surface whereon an image is formed; and a toroidal mirror for reflecting the image received from the image forming surface, wherein the semi-reflecting surface is a substantially spherical surface.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 72 words
Apparatus according to any claims 1-5 and including an optical projector for projecting an image onto the semi-transparent portion including: an image forming surface whereon an image is formed; a toroidal mirror for reflecting the image from the image forming surface; an imaging lens system for receiving the image from the toroidal mirror; and a focusing lens system for receiving the image from the imaging lens for projection onto the semi-transparent surface.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 69 words
A helmet mounted display comprising: A visor attached to the helmet and having a partially reflecting semi-transparent portion in the view of the wearer; and an optical projector for projecting an image onto the semi-transparent portion including: an image forming surface whereon an image is formed; and an optical system for focusing the image at separate sagittal and tangential foci between the image forming surface and the semi-transparent portion.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 62 words
A helmet mounted display comprising: a visor attached to the helmet and having a substantially spherical partially reflecting semi-transparent portion in the view of the wearer; and an optical projector for projecting an image onto the semi-transparent portion including: an image forming surface whereon an image is formed; and a toroidal mirror for reflecting the image received from the image forming surface.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 89 words
A helmet mounted display comprising: a visor attached to the helmet and having a partially reflecting semi-transparent portion in the view of the wearer; and an optical projector for projecting an image onto the semi-transparent portion including: an image forming surface whereon an image is formed; a toroidal mirror for reflecting the image from the image forming surface; an imaging lens system for receiving the image from the toroidal mirror; and a focusing lens system for receiving the image from the imaging lens for projection onto the semi-transparent surface.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
Apparatus according to claim 8 or claim 11 wherein the imaging lens system is an astigmatic lens system.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 17 words
Apparatus according to claim 8, 11 or 12 wherein the focusing lens system is a prismatic lens.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 16 words
Apparatus according to claim 6 or claim 9 wherein the optical system comprises a toroidal mirror.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 19 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 6, 9 or 14 including a focusing element situated at the sagittal focus.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 20 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 6, 9, 14 or 15 including a focusing element situated at the tangential focus.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 52 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 6, 9 or 14-16 wherein the semi-transparent portion has a substantially spherical shape, the image is reflected therefrom at an angle to the radius thereof and the sagittal and tangential foci of the spherical surface correspond, respectively, to the sagittal and tangential foci of the image.
Claim 18
