Abstract
Abstract A source module and its changes in each of at least two interrelated development environments are maintained in delta structures. Various procedures and working tables/files are provided to merge the delta structures whenever the latest revision/edition of the source module in one of the environment is reconciled/resynchronized to the latest edition/revision of the source module in the other environment. As a result, all change deltas are maintained and propagated among the environments without any loss in change history.

A method for controlling changes to objects in a first and second development environments, said objects and changes to said objects being representable as hierarchies of incremental deltas, said method comprising the steps of: maintaining a object as a first root delta of a first hierarchy of incremental deltas in said first environment; maintaining said object as a second root delta of a second hierarchy of incremental deltas in said second environment; maintaining changes to said object in said first environment as a first plurality of incremental deltas of said first hierarchy of incremental deltas; maintaining changes to said object in said second environment as a second plurality of incremental deltas of said second hierarchy of incremental deltas; and merging said second hierarchy of incremental deltas in said second environment into said first hierarchy of incremental deltas in said first environment; whereby causing said changes made to said object in said second environment to be incorporated into changes made to said object in said first environment without any loss of change history.

An apparatus for controlling changes to objects in a first and second development environments, said objects and changes to said objects being representable as hierarchies of incremental deltas, said apparatus comprising: first maintenance means for maintaining said object as a first root delta of a first hierarchy of incremental deltas in said first environment, and for maintaining changes to said object in said first environment as a first plurality of incremental deltas of said first hierarchy of incremental deltas; second maintenance means for maintaining said object as a second root delta of a second hierarchy of incremental deltas in said second environment, and for maintaining changes to said object in said second environment as a second plurality of incremental deltas of said second hierarchy of incremental deltas; and merge means for merging said second hierarchy of incremental deltas in said second environment into said first hierarchy of incremental deltas in said first environment, said merge means having access to said first and second hierarchies of incremental deltas; whereby causing said changes made to said object in said second environment to be incorporated into changes made to said object in said first environment without any loss of change history.
