Abstract

Abstract A system for distributing remote telephone traffic between a base station and remote antenna site is disclosed. The base station and remote antenna sites are connected via a cable television network. The base station receives from a public telephone network parallel channels of outbound voice signals for radio telephones operating within the cellular areas of the remote antenna sites. The base station will digitize each of these outbound telephone signals, and time compress them to fit in a transmit frame having the length of a standard channel transmit frame of a radio telephone system. The transmit frame is modulated on a subcarrier and applied to the cable television network. A plurality of remote sites are connected to the cable television network and receive and rebroadcast digitized voice signals to radio telephones operating within their cellular areas. Inbound serial channel data received from a radio telephone is inserted in a serial receive data frame along with other channel data received from other radio telephones operating in this cell. A second subcarrier is modulated with the receive data frame and applied to the cable television network for transmission upstream to the base station. The base station will demodulate the inbound receive frame and apply the digitized voice signals to the public telephone network to complete a telephone communication link between the radio telephones and public telephone network.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 128 words
A telephone system for distributing remote telephone traffic between a base station and a remote antenna site comprising: a base station connected to a public telephone network, said base station applying outbound telephone signals to said cable television network via a subcarrier signal, and applying to said public telephone network in bound telephone signals received from said cable television network via a second subcarrier; and, a radio telephone communication system at said remote site for removing said outbound telephone signals, and applying said outbound telephone signals to a transceiver for communicating with a plurality of remote radio telephones, said radio telephone communication system providing a serial receive data frame comprising a plurality of inbound telephone signals from said transceiver, via said second subcarrier to said cable television network.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 146 words
The telephone system of claim 1 further comprising second and third radio telephone communication systems located at second and third remote antenna sites, said second and third radio telephone communication systems connected to said cable television network for removing said outbound telephone signals from said cable network, and applying said outbound telephone signals to a respective transceiver for communicating with said remote radio telephones over different geographical locations, said third radio telephone communication system applying a serial receive data frame comprising a plurality of inbound telephone signals from said transceiver via a third subcarrier on said cable television network, said second radio telephone system removing said receive data frame from said cable network, and adding to said receive data frame inbound telephone signals received via said transceiver to said receive data frame, and adding said data frame to said cable television network via a fourth subcarrier.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 67 words
The telephone system of claim 2 further comprising means at said first remote site for removing said receive data frame signals from said fourth subcarrier, and combining said removed data frame signals with said plurality of inbound telephone signals received by said first remote site transceiver into a single receive data frame for transmission via said second subcarrier over said cable television network to said base station.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
The telephone system of claim 1 wherein said serial receive data frame comprises a plurality of groups of data bits, each group including a like ordered bit of said inbound radio signals.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 37 words
The telephone system of claim 1 wherein said base station further comprises means for producing a transmit frame of said outbound telephone signals and applying said transmit frame to said cable television network via said first subcarrier.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 81 words
The telephone system of claim 1 wherein said transceiver at said remote site includes: a radio receiver producing a plurality of intermediate frequency signals each of which contains one of said inbound signals; an intermediate frequency synthesizer for generating a demodulation signal for separating said inbound telephone signals from said intermediate frequency signals; a plurality of shift registers for storing each bit of said inbound telephone signals; and, a first in-first out buffer for storing the contents of said shift registers.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 82 words
The telephone system of claim 6 further comprising: a demodulator connected to said cable network for receiving a serial data frame from a second remote site and producing therefrom a clocking signal and a data signal; means for combining said received serial data with data from said buffer to form a second data frame; and, means for applying said second data frame via said second subcarrier on said cable network, whereby said base station receives data from each of said antenna sites.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 236 words
A cellular telephone system for distributing remote telephone traffic between a base station and remote antenna site via a cable television network comprising: a base station connected to the head end of said cable television network and to a public telephone network, said base station comprising: a bridge means connected to said public telephone network for separating a plurality of telephone connections into a plurality of distinct channels; analog to digital conversion means for converting telephone signals received from each channel into a digital signal; means for serially combining said digital signals into a single transmit frame; means for transmitting said transmit frame via a subcarrier over said cable television network; a demodulator for removing from said cable network a receive frame of serial digital signals for each of said channels; digital to parallel conversion means connected to receive said receive frame serial digital signals and connect each of said receive frame digital signals to one of said channels; and, at least one remote antenna site comprising: a transceiver for communicating with radio telephones via a radio frequency link; interface means connecting said transceiver to said cable television network comprising: means for generating said receive data frame of signals from signals received from said radio telephones; means for applying said data frame to said cable television network; and, means for receiving said transmit frame from said cable television network forming transmit channel information for said transceiver.
