Method of producing light wave guides on a substrate

Abstract Translated from German Bei einem Verfahren zur Herstellung von Lichtwellenleitern (8) in Form von Streifenleitern auf einem Substrat (1) werden auf das Substrat (1) zwei transparente Schichten (3 und 6) übereinander aufgebracht und in Form der Lichtwellenleiter (8) strukturiert. Das Material der beiden Schichten (3 und 6) wird so gewählt, daß der Schmelzpunkt des Materials der zweiten Schicht (6) niedriger ist als derjenige des Materials der ersten Schicht (3), jedoch einen höheren Brechungsindex aufweist als die erste Schicht (3). Nach der Strukturierung wird ein Erhitzungsprozeß durchgeführt, bei dem das Material der zweiten Schicht (6) schmilzt und seine Oberfläche infolge der Oberflächenspannung im Querschnitt gesehen die Form eines Kreisbogens annimmt. Durch diese Querschnittsform ist nach dem Abschleifen oder Polieren der Stirnfläche (10) des Lichtwellenleiters (8) an einer Substratkante (11) eine gute Ein- bzw. Auskopplung von Lichtwellen in bzw. aus einer Lichtleitfaser möglich. In a method for producing optical waveguides (8) in the form of strip conductors on a substrate (1), two transparent layers (3 and 6) are applied to one another on the substrate (1) and structured in the form of the optical waveguides (8). The material of the two layers (3 and 6) is selected so that the melting point of the material of the second layer (6) is lower than that of the material of the first layer (3), but has a higher refractive index than the first layer (3) . After the structuring, a heating process is carried out, in which the material of the second layer (6) melts and its surface takes on the shape of a circular arc when viewed in cross section as a result of the surface tension. With this cross-sectional shape, after the end face (10) of the optical waveguide (8) has been ground or polished, a good coupling or uncoupling of light waves into and out of an optical fiber is possible on a substrate edge (11).
