Abstract

Abstract A process is disclosed for polymerizing olefins employing a special aluminoxane composition in which the aluminoxane is prepared by reacting an organoaluminum compound with a metal compound containing water of hydration wherein enough of the solids in the resulting composition are retained to result in an aluminoxane composition which will provide improved polymerization activity.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 99 words
A process for the polymerization of olefins, characterized by subjection to polymerization at least one olefin in the presence of a catalyst system comprising an aluminoxane composition, said aluminoxane composition being prepared by reacting an organoaluminum compound with at least one metal compound containing water of hydration, wherein enough of the solids are left in the resulting composition to result in improved polymerization activity as compared to a polymerization in which the solids were separated from the resulting aluminoxane, wherein the metal of said metal compound is a metal which is not reduced during the formation of the aluminoxane.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 29 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said aluminoxane composition contains substantially all of the solids that were present after the reaction of the organoaluminum compound and the metal compound.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
The process of claim 1 or 2 wherein said organoaluminum compound is hydrocarbylaluminum compound, preferably a trihydrocarbylaluminum compound.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
The process of claim 3 wherein said trihydrocarbylaluminum compound is a trialkyl compound in which each alkyl group has 1 to 4 carbon atoms, preferably trimethylaluminum.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 43 words
The process of any of the preceding claims wherein the metal of the metal compound containing water of hydration is selected from metals of Groups IA, IIA, IIB, IIIA, VIII, and metals having atomic numbers in the range of 58 to 71 inclusive.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 38 words
The process of any of the preceding claims wherein the mole ratio of the aluminum in said organo aluminum compound to water of hydration in said metal compound is at least about 0.5:1, preferably at least about 1:1.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 36 words
The process of any of the preceding claims wherein the metal of said metal compound is selected from magnesium, iron, aluminum, neodymium, cerium, nickel, lanthanum, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, ytterbium, zinc and sodium.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 19 words
The process of claim 7 wherein the metal of said metal compound is selected from magnesium, iron and neodymium.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
The process of claim 8 wherein said catalyst system further comprises at least one metallocene of a metal selected from Group IVB.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 12 words
The process of claim 9 wherein said metallocene is bis(cyclopentadienyl) zirconium dichloride.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 34 words
The process of claim 10 wherein the gram/atom ratio of the aluminum in said aluminoxane to the zirconium in said zirconocene is in the range of 5:1 to 10⁵:1, preferably from 30:1 to 60:1.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 25 words
The process of any of claims 9 to 11 wherein said metal compound containing water of hydration is neodymium trichloride, iron sulfate or magnesium dichloride.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process of any of claims 9 to 12 wherein said catalyst system further includes trimethylaluminum.
