Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 134 words
A surgical fastener which comprises: a) a rivet (100) having an axial bore (104), distal locking means (116) for frictionally engaging a bone to secure the rivet thereto and a proximal head portion (101); and b) a pin (200) receivable into said bore and proximally slidable therein, said pin having means (206) for activating said rivet locking means in response to a proximal locking movement of said pin within said bore, in which locking movement the pin is retracted within the axial bore of the rivet in a direction against the proximal head portion of said rivet: characterised by; means (110) for holding soft tissue to said bone, said holding means projecting distally from the proximal head portion of the rivet, whereby the fastener is apt for securing said soft tissue to said bone.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 13 words
A fastener as claimed in claim 1 and fabricated from a resorbable material.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
A fastener as claimed in either of the preceding claims, wherein said locking means comprises a radially expandable part (114) of said rivet.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
A fastener as claimed in claim 3 wherein the expandable part comprises at least two legs (115).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
A fastener as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the distal locking means Comprises barbs (116).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 31 words
A fastener as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein said soft tissue holding means (110) comprises a plurality of tissue-engaging barbs (110) projecting distally from said head portion.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 33 words
A fastener as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein said means for activating the rivet locking means comprises a flared portion (206) at the distal end portion of said pin.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
A fastener as claimed in claim 7, wherein said pin further comprises a portion (234) of substantially uniform diameter disposed distally of said flared portion.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 32 words
A fastener as claimed in claim 7 or 8, wherein said flared portion (206) is engageable with an inner surface of said locking means (116) to expand said locking means radially outward.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 58 words
A fastener as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the pin (200) includes a circumferential notch (205) defining a proximal portion (203) and a distal portion (204), said notch providing a breaking means for separating said proximal portion from said distal portion when a pulling force of sufficient magnitude is applied to said proximal portion.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 57 words
A fastener as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein said pin (200) comprises at least one rib (230) formed on an outer surface, and said bore comprises a complementary surface (130) to engage said at least one rib said pin to restrict movement of said pin in a direction opposite to the locking movement.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 30 words
A fastener as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, with an eyelet (250) positioned over the proximal end of the pin (200) to facilitate gripping of said pin.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 24 words
A fastener as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein said pin has a rounded conical tip (236) at the distal end.
