Abstract

Abstract An insert (50) is provided to be attached to a shield (24) on a surgical trocar obturator handle (30). The insert is actuated by the surgical trocar cannula handle (30) so that it causes the shield to expose the sharpened obturator tip after insertion of the obturator and shield within the cannula. After usage, the insert is deactivated so that the shield again covers the obturator. The obturator can then be removed from the cannula handle and obturator shield, and the obturator handle can be discarded safely.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 107 words
A trocar assembly comprising: an obturator connected to an obturator handle; a shield surrounding said obturator, and movable relative to said obturator, and a spring maintaining said obturator in a shielded position with said shield surrounding said obturator; a cannula connected to a cannula handle, said obturator and shield insertable into said cannula such that said cannula handle and said obturator handle come into contact; and a shield connector emplaceable between said cannula handle and said obturator handle when said obturator is placed into said cannula such that said connector causes the said exposure of said obturator tip from said shield when said handles come into contact.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 69 words
A trocar assembly comprising: a shield and obturator having a sharpened tip connected to an obturator handle, said shield retractable into said obturator handle; a cannula connected to a cannula handle, said shield and obturator insertable into said cannula; and actuating means actuable by either of said cannula handle or said obturator handle, said actuator means causing said shield to retract into said obturator handle to expose said tip.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
The assembly of claim 2 wherein said obturator, cannula and sheild are all tubular in shape.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
The assembly of claim 2 wherein said actuating means comprises an insert attached to said shield.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 18 words
The assembly of claim 4 wherein said insert is emplaced between said obturator handle and said cannula handle.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 15 words
The assembly of claim 5 wherein said shield is spring loaded within said obturator handle.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 55 words
A method of puncturing skin comprising: a. placing a shield covering a shielded obstruction tip and connected to an obturator handle into a cannula connected to a cannula handle; b. actuating said shield to expose said tip, said actuation taking place during contact between said handles; and c. using said tip to puncture the skin.
