Abstract

Abstract The apparatus comprises an elongate, flexible separation chamber (51) receivable in a slot (46) of a rotor, so that rotation of the rotor causes separation of a fluid, supplied through an inlet port (51a) to the chamber (51), in regions (104,106) along opposite walls (50d,50e) of the chamber. Each component is removed through a corresponding outlet port (51b,51c). One of the outlet ports (51c) is arranged adjacent to the inlet port (51a) and a ramp (111) is provided or formed in the chamber (51) to direct flow of the respective component towards that outlet in a direction opposite to the direction of fluid flow through the inlet.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 175 words
Centrifugal processing apparatus for separating an exterior source fluid into components and including a separation chamber having spaced first and second walls (50d,50e), the second wall (50e) being disposed further from the axis of rotation than the first wall (50d) to define, in operation, a low-g region (106) in which a first component separates adjacent the first wall (50d), a high-g region (104) in which a second component separates adjacent the second wall (50e) and an intermediate-g force region between the walls where an interface forms between the components, an inlet port (51a) for conveying fluid into the separation chamber (51), an outlet port (51c) disposed adjacent the inlet port (51a) and adjacent the second wall (50e) in the high-g region (104), and ramp means (111) extending along the second wall (50e) towards the outlet port (51c) and arranged so as to direct the second component to flow along the ramp means (111) towards the outlet port (51c) in a direction opposite to the direction of flow of source fluid through the inlet port (51a).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 24 words
Apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein the inlet port (50a) is located closer to the axis of rotation than the second outlet port (50c).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
Apparatus according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the ramp means (111) is integrally formed as part of the separation chamber (51).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
Apparatus according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the ramp means (111) is formed as part of the rotatable receiving chamber 40.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 120 words
A separation chamber (51) for use in centrifugal processing apparatus according to Claim 1 and comprising spaced first and second walls (50d,50e) with first component and second component separation regions (104,106) adjacent said walls and an intermediate interface region (108) between said separation regions, an inlet port (51a) for conveying fluid into the chamber, first and second outlet ports (51b,51c) for first and second separated components respectively, and ramp means (111) extending along the second wall (50e) towards the second outlet port (50c) and arranged so as to direct the second component to flow along the ramp means towards the second outlet port (50c) in a direction opposite to the flow direction of source fluid through the inlet port (50a).
