Abstract

Abstract A fibrous tape base web material comprises fibres bonded together by paper making bonds with the web having a first surface with patterned undulations and an opposite second relative smooth surface. The web has an apparent bulk in the range giving a thickness of between 0.025 and 0.005 mm in a sheet having a weight of 1.63 per m² (about 0.10 to about 0.20 caliper points per lb ream), a machine direction tensile strength of at least 2.86 kg/cm (16 lb/in) and a machine direction stretch of at least 8%. Conveniently the tape base web can be manufactured utilizing the steps of forming a wet fibrous web, pressing said web to thereby partially dewater said web to between about 30 and 50% solids, moving said material at a speed about 5% and about 25% less than the surface speed of said roll.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 86 words
A fibrous tape base web material comprising fibres bonded together, said web having a first surface with patterned undulations and an opposite second relatively smooth surface, said web having an apparent bulk in the range giving a thickness of between 0.0025 and 0.005 mm in a sheet having a weight of 1.63 gm per m² (about 0.10 to about 0.20 caliper points per lb ream), a machine direction tensile strength of at least 2.86 kg/cm (16 lb/in) and a machine direction stretch of at least 8%.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 40 words
A web material according to claim 1, wherein randomly arranged fibres are bonded together by papermaking bonds, said web material having a machine direction stretch of about 8% to about 13% and a caliper of less than 0.15 mm (0.006").
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 50 words
A web material according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the first surface is patterned with undulations of an amplitude variance between about 0.0076 mm (0.0003") and about 0.010 mm (0.0004") and the second opposite relatively smooth surface has undulations with an amplitude variance of less than 0.0076 mm (0.0003").
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 40 words
A masking tape comprising a sheet of fibrous material according to any preceding claim and having an adhesive coating coated on the surface thereof provided with said patterned undulations, the opposite, relatively smooth surface, being provided with a nonstick coating.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 168 words
A method of manufacturing a stretchable fibrous tape base web having one surface with improved surface smoothness, comprising the steps of: (a) forming a wet fibrous web, (b) pressing the web thereby to dewater said web partially to between about 30 and 50% solids, (c) transferring said web to a rotating a smooth-surfaced roll, (d) forming a non-compression nip between said roll and a fluid-pervious fabric material having an undulating, patterned surface; (e) moving said material at a speed between about 5% and about 25% less than the surface speed of said roll; (f) applying a vacuum through said material at said nip to transfer said web from said roll to said material directly and to conform generally the surface of said web in contact with said moving material to the patterned surface of said material while the surface of said web opposite said moving material remains substantially smooth; and (g) drying said web, said dried web having an apparent bulk of less than 0.20 caliper pts/lb ream.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 120 words
Apparatus for manufacturing a stretchable fibrous base web having one surface with improved smoothness, comprising: (a) means for forming a wet fibrous web, (b) dewatering means for partially dewatering said web to between about 30 and 50% solids, (c) smooth-surfaced means for conveying the dewatered web at a predetermined speed to an embossing station; (d) fabric conveying means for supporting the web at said embossing station and for conveying the web from the embossing station at a speed less than said predetermined speed; (e) embossing means acting on said web through said fabric conveying means at the embossing station, for forming a three dimensional surface on one face of the web; and (f) means for drying said web after embossing.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 27 words
Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the embossing means comprises means for applying a vacuum through said fabric to draw the web into contact with the fabric.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 80 words
A sheet of fibrous web material comprising contacting fibres bonded together, said sheet having opposite smooth surfaces, an apparent bulk in the range giving a thickness of between 0.0025 and 0.005 mm in a sheet having a weight of 1.63 g/m² (0.10 to about 0.20 caliper pts/lb ream) and a machine direction stretch of at least 8%, and wherein surface undulations on the opposite smooth surface of said sheet have an amplitude variance of less than 0.005 mm (0.0002 inch).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
A sheet according to claim 8, wherein said sheet has a machine direction tensile strength of at least 2.14 kg/cm (12 lb/inch).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 21 words
A sheet according to claim 8 or 9, wherein the caliper of said sheet is less than 0.15 mm (0.006 inch).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 35 words
A sheet according to claim 8, 9 or 10, which is in the form of masking tape with a first of said surfaces having an adhesive coating and the second surface having a nonstick coating.
