Abstract
Abstract The invention relates to a twisted nematic liquid crystal display which has the best viewing angle at a position directly opposite to the display panel. A single pixel of the display panel comprises a normal tilt domain and a reverse tilt domain of molecules of the liquid crystal. In a preferred embodiment the size of the normal tilt domain is equal to that of the reverse tilt domain.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim
72 words
A liquid crystal display having a liquid crystal panel in which a plurality of pixels are arranged in a matrix wherein each pixel of said liquid panel comprises a single domain when a voltage is not applied, and each pixel of said liquid panel comprises a first domain having a first tilt and a second domain having a second tilt of molecules of a liquid crystal material when the voltage is applied.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
24 words
A liquid crystal display as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the size of said first domain is equal to that of said second domain.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
44 words
A liquid crystal display as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the direction of said first tilt of said molecules of the liquid crystal and that of said second tilt of said molecules of the liquid crystal are opposite to each other.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
66 words
A liquid crystal display as claimed in Claim 1, wherein to form said first domain and said second domain when a voltage is applied, the molecules of the liquid crystal in the middle of a cross section of a cell are orientated horizontally in a single domain when the voltage is not applied, at a pre-tilt angle of zero to an upper and a lower substrate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
80 words
A liquid crystal display as claimed in Claim 4, wherein to accomplish a state where the middle of the cross section of the cell is orientated horizontally with respect to the upper and the lower substrates when the voltage is not applied, a pre-tilt state of molecules of the liquid crystal on orientation films of the upper and the lower substrates is twisted in a direction opposite to twist for stabilizing the pre-tilt state when the voltage is not applied.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
56 words
A liquid crystal display according to Claim 5, wherein twist opposite, in direction, to twist for stabilizing said pre-tilt state is caused by adding a chiral dopant which causes twist opposite, in direction, to twist for stabilizing said pre-tilt state and/or by bias-rubbing which causes twist opposite, in direction, to twist for stabilizing said pre-tilt state.
