Arrangement for coupling and/or uncoupling of light for a single-mode lightguide

Abstract

Abstract The aim is to specify a simply constructed coupler having a high efficiency. Complicated directional couplers and star couplers are known. In bending couplers, it is difficult to couple optical power effectively without damaging the lightguide. The effect is utilised such that optical power is transmitted at a connecting point between two lightguides having a cross-sectional discontinuity (3) of the core (1). An adiabatic taper (4) brings the core diameter back to its original size. The transmitted wave AW can be detected by a receiver (5) surrounding the lightguide. The light path can be reversed in order to irradiate optical power. <IMAGE>
