Claim 1
Independent Claim
92 words
A process which comprises (A) feeding one molar proportion of molten diphenylalkane which has been maintained under a non-oxidizing atmosphere to a reaction vessel containing a bromination catalyst and 15-30 molar proportions of bromine which contains 10 ppm impurities, the reaction mass being maintained at a temperature in the range of 15° C to reflux during the feeding, (B) then separating a decabromodiphenylalkane-predominant product from the reaction mass, and (C) heat treating the separated product under time and temperature conditions sufficient to form a decabromodiphenylalkane-predominant product containing a minor amount of dodecabromodiphenylalkane.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
10 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the diphenylalkane is 1,2-diphenylethane.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
14 words
The process of claim 1 utilizing 18-23 moles of bromine per mol of diphenylalkane.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
93 words
A process which comprises (A) feeding one molar proportion of molten 1,2-diphenylethane which has been maintained under a non-oxidizing atmosphere to a reaction vessel containing a bromination catalyst and 18-23 molar proportions of bromine which contains 10 ppm impurities, the reaction mass being maintained at a temperature in the range of 15 ° C to reflux during the feeding, (B) then separating a decabromodiphenylethane-predominant product from the reaction mass, and (C) heat treating the separated product at 200-280° C for 1-20 hours to form a decabromodiphenylethane-predominant product containing a minor amount of 1,2-dibromo-bis-pentabromophenylethane.
