Abstract
Abstract A tool insert such as a nozzle is produced by providing a former (10) depositing a diamond layer (12) on at least a portion of a surface (14) of the former (10), bonding a polymer-based support (18) to a surface (16) of the diamond layer (12) and removing the former (10) to expose a wear-resistant diamond surface (24). The top portion (22) may be removed to produce a nozzle. The diamond layer is preferably a CVD diamond layer. <IMAGE> <IMAGE>

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
59 words
A tool insert comprising a diamond layer (12) presenting major surfaces (24, 16) on opposite sides thereof, the one major surface (24) providing a wear-resistant surface for the insert and the other major surface (16) being bonded to a polymer-based support (18) which has sufficient strength to withstand the forces to which the tool insert is subjected in use.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
23 words
A tool insert according to claim 1 wherein the wear-resistant surface (24) of the diamond layer (12) is shaped to define a passage.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
29 words
A tool insert according to claim 2 wherein the wear-resistant surface (24) of the diamond layer (12) is shaped to define a passage (26) of closed configuration in section.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
18 words
A tool insert according to claim 3 wherein the passage (26) is a cylindrical or a conical passage.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
21 words
A tool insert according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the diamond layer (12) is a CVD diamond layer.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
18 words
A tool insert according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the polymer has the following characteristics:
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
16 words
A tool insert according to claim 6 wherein the polymer is selected from polyethylene and polypropylene.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
31 words
A tool insert according to any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the polymer is selected from polyether ether ketone, polyether ketone, polyaryl ether ketone, poly (amide-imide) and polyphenylene sulphide.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
15 words
A tool insert according to any one of the preceding claims which is a nozzle.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
69 words
A process of producing a tool insert according to any one of the preceding claims which includes the steps of providing a suitable former (10), depositing a diamond layer (12) on at least a portion of a surface (14) of the former (10), bonding a polymer-based support (18) to a surface (16) of the diamond layer (12) and removing the former (10) to expose a wear-resistant diamond surface (24).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
27 words
A process according to claim 10 wherein the former (10) is made of a material selected from silicon, titanium, hafnium, tantalum, molybdenum and carbides and nitrides thereof.
