Abstract

Abstract An interactive compact disc is adapted to be recorded with audio signals, computer data and full motion video signals. This is possible by means of a suitably chosen encoding algorithm which efficiently encodes the video signal into code blocks of variable lengths each corresponding to a picture or picture pair. A decoder delay parameter is associated with each code block, which parameter indicates the quantity of delay with which the corresponding picture is to be displayed after said code block has been received.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 58 words
A method of transmitting audio and/or video signals in which successive signal portions are converted into code blocks by means of an encoding algorithm, characterized in that a parameter is associated with at least one selected code block, which parameter indicates the quantity of delay with which said code block must be decoded after it has been received.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, in which the audio and/or video signal is limited in time, characterized in that the parameter is associated with the first code block.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the parameter is regularly associated with code blocks.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the parameter is associated with all code blocks.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the parameter represents a time indication.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the parameter indicates a number of clock periods of a predetermined clock signal.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 39 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the parameter indicates the state of a counter which is regularly charged with a reference value which is also transmitted and which counter further receives a predetermined clock signal.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the parameter indicates the degree of occupation of a buffer memory in which the received code blocks are stored.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 47 words
An encoding apparatus for transmitting an audio and/or video signal in accordance with the method as claimed in any one of Claims 1-8, characterized in that the apparatus is adapted to determine said parameter for said code block and to associate said parameter with the code block.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 55 words
A decoding apparatus for receiving an audio and/or video signal transmitted in accordance with the method as claimed in any one of Claims 1-8, characterized in that the apparatus is adapted to select said parameter when said code block is received and to decode the code block with a time delay dictated by the parameter.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 32 words
A transmission medium on which an audio and/or video signal is recorded in the form of code blocks obtained in accordance with the method as claimed in any one of Claims 1-8.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 16 words
A transmission medium as claimed in Claim 11, in the form of an optically readable disc.
