Abstract
Abstract A system and method for database management (18) for providing support for long-term storage and retrieval of objects created by application programs (14) written at least in part in object-oriented programming languages consists of a plurality of software modules. These modules provide data definition language translation, object management (42), object translation (52), and persistent object storage service (54). Such system implements an object fault capability to reduce the number of interactions between the application, the database management system, and the database.

Claim 2
Dependent Claim
23 words
The system for database management of Claim 1, wherein said internal objects further comprise architecture object and at least one object type description.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim

The system for database management of Claim 1, further comprising: a data definition language translator accessible by a user adopted to interact with said object manager to process preselected definitions; wherein said data definition langugage translator generates a first portion of information used by said object translator as well as said object manager during execution of said at least one application program and generates a second portion of information used by said user in building an application program.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
15 words
The system for database management of Claim 1 wherein said preselected definitions are class definitions.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
15 words
The system for database management of Claim 1 wherein said preselected definitions are data definitions.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
82 words
A method for registering class definitions with a database management service prior to execution of an application program, whose instances are stored in at least one database during execution of said at least one application program, comprising the steps of: scanning a source file containing class definitions; extracting predetermined portions of such class definitions; saving such extracted predetermined portions; and employing such saved predetermined portions for object translation and execution of predefined functions during execution of said at least one application program.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
36 words
The method for registering class definitions of Claim 6, wherein said step of extracting predetermined portions of such class definitions further comprises the steps of: extracting preselected portions of information on data members, inheritance, and functions.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
55 words
The method for registering class definitions of Claim 7, wherein said step of extracting information on data members comprises: extracting a name of said data member, name of type for said data member, location of said data member in the instance of this class, as well as size, alignment and padding of said data member.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
55 words
The method for registering said class definitions of Claim 8, wherein said step of extracting further comprising the steps of: extracting size of array, it the data member type is an array; and extracting pointer type, data type of pointer reference, and number of references pointed to, it the data member type is a pointer.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
51 words
The method for registering class definitions of Claim 9, wherein said step of extracting pointer type, data type of pointer reference, and number of references pointed to, further comprises the steps of: determining whether such data type of pointer reference is a class instance, a structure, or a fundamental data type.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
43 words
The method for registering class definitions of Claim 9, wherein said step of extracting the type of pointer as well as what it points to further comprises the steps of: determining whether such type of pointer refers to an independent or dependent instance.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
37 words
The method for registering class definitions of Claim 8, wherein said step of extracting information on inheritance further comprises the steps of: extracting class name and whether independent or dependent object; and extracting size of class instance.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
31 words
The method for registering class definitions of Claim 8, wherein said step of extracting information on functions further comprises the step of: scanning for predetermined keyword indicating existence of virtual function.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
31 words
The method for registering class definitions of Claim 8, wherein said step of extracting information on functions further comprises the step of: scanning for predetermined keyword indicating existence of demon function.
Claim 15
Independent Claim
93 words
A system for dynamically specifying how data is to be clustered and retrieved during execution of an application program, comprising: at least one database; and an object management system interfacing with said at least one database containing an indicator and a retriever; wherein said indicator specifies how referenced objects are to be retrieved when their referencing object is retrieved; wherein said retriever determines whether an object is to be retrieved when its referencing object is retrieved, otherwise to automatically being such referenced object in only when it is accessed from its referencing object.
Claim 16
Independent Claim
177 words
A system for storing objects in at least one relational database management system without decomposing these objects into relational attributes in one or more relational tuples for retrieval during execution of an application program, comprising: an object manager; a persistent object storage server interfacing between said at least one database system and said object manager employing an SQL interface; and an object translator accessible by said object manager to generate a first buffer containing an external representation of at least one object and a second buffer containing an external reference from said at least one object to additional at least one object; wherein said persistent object storage server stores said first and second buffers, along with selected identifiers, into said at least one database system; wherein said persistent object storage server retrieves said stored first and second buffers as well as said selected identifiers, from said at least one database system for return to said object manager, which in turn passes said retrieved stored objects to said object translator for use by said application program during execution.
