Abstract A communication apparatus which selectively uses plural telephone sets and a line. A method of communication in which a plurality of telephone sets and data communication apparatus selectively use a line, comprising the steps of: discriminating on receipt of an incoming call whether speech communication or data communication will be performed, and automatically switching said telephone set or said data communication apparatus in accordance with the discrimination, and detecting a signal to designate one of said plurality of telephone sets during said discrimination process, and calling a telephone set corresponding to the designating signal when said designating signal is detected.

A method of communication according to Claim 8, wherein said discrimination process detects whether or not a signal on data communication has been received within a specified time after receiving an incoming call, and when a signal on said data communication has been received, it is determined that data communication will be performed, while when a signal on said data communication has not been received, it is determined that speech communication will be performed.
