Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to a method of predicting future measurement values for handoff decisions in a mobile radio communication system. At discrete points of time, represented by an integer n, measured measurement values (s(n)) are fed to a predictor comprising an adaptive filter (F1), the filter coefficients ( C (n)) of which are used to form estimates (ŝ(n+L|n)) of future measurement values (s(n+L)) at discrete points of time n+L, where L is a positive integer, on the basis of the measured measurement values.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 81 words
A method of predicting, in a mobile radio communication system, future measurement values for handoff decisions, characterized in that at discrete points in time, represented by integers n, measured measurement values (s(n)) are fed to a predictor comprising an adaptive filter (F1), the filter coefficients ( C (n)) of which are used for forming first estimates (ŝ(n+L|n)) of future measurement values (s(n+L)) at discrete points n+L in time, where L is a positive integer, on the basis of measured measurement values.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 130 words
The1 method of claim 1, characterized in that (a) measurement values delayed L discrete time steps are fed to the adaptive filter (F1) for forming second estimates (ŝ(n|n-L)) of measurement values at the discrete points n in time, (b) that the difference between the second estimate (ŝ(n|n-L)) and the actual measurement value (s(n)) at each point n in time is used for adjusting the filter coefficients ( C (n)) of the filter (F1) at point n in time, (c) that the adjusted filter coefficients ( C (n)) are copied for forming filter coefficients in a controllable filter (F2), and (d) that the first estimates (ŝ(n+L|n)) of future measurement values at points n+L in time are formed in the controllable filter (F2) with the aid of the measured measurement values (s(n)).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 2, characterized in that the filter coefficients ( C (n)) are adjusted with the LMS algorithm.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 2, characterized in that the filter coefficients ( C (n)) are adjusted with the RLS algorithm.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 30 words
The method of any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the adaptive filter (F1) comprises between 1 and 30, preferably between 4 and 10 filter coefficients ( C (n)).
Claim 6
Independent Claim 24 words
The method of any of the preceding claims, characterized in that L is an integer between 1 and 20, preferably between 1 and 4.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 27 words
The method of any of the preceding claims, characterized in that measurement values are measured in a mobile station (MS) and transferred to a base station (BS).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
The method of claim 7, characterized in that the measurement values comprise the signal strength of signals transmitted from base stations (BS) as measured at the mobile station (MS).
