Abstract

The implant, which preferably serves as the intervertebral prosthesis to replace the nucleus pulposus, consists of a band-like chamber (1) which can be filled with an incompressible medium and has a valve (3) at one end. A compact band (6, 7) is attached to the other end of the chamber (1). Chamber (1) and band (6, 7) can be wound onto valve (3) after insertion into the surgically created cavity in the intervertebral region and are only filled with the incompressible medium after winding. Two requirements are met with the implant; on the one hand, the band (6, 7) that surrounds the outside of the chamber (1) when the prosthesis is implanted ensures that the radial forces that occur during loading are absorbed by the implant and do not strain the natural tissue of the annulus fibrosus. On the other hand, filling the chamber (1) after insertion and winding onto the valve (3) enables the implant to be implanted by a relatively small intervention that requires only a small opening.
