Abstract

Abstract A disk drive storage system comprises an array of disk drive units (230). The disk drives (160) contained in the units have a diameter of 65mm and rotate at 10,000 RPM which has the effect of reducing latency. In a preferred embodiment data and corresponding parity information are converted into portions and stored on a respective different one of the disk drive units. Data stored on a filed disk drive unit can be regenerated on a replacement disk drive unit. A disk drive unit can be replaced without powering down the system. Four disk drive units can be arranged in a four drive system to match the space geometry of the traditional half-high flexible disk drive used in a personal computer. <IMAGE>

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 39 words
A disk storage system comprising: an array of disk drive units each of said units including a hard disk with a diameter of less than 85mm; and means for rotating said disk at a speed greater than 5,500 RPM.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 76 words
A disk storage system as claimed in claim 1 further comprising: control means for receiving data to be stored in said system, converting said data into data portions and at least one parity portion and storing each of said portions on a respective different one of said disk drive units; and error correction means for regenerating in original form, corrupted data from any one of said disk drive units by using said data and parity portions.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
A disk storage system as claimed in any of claims 1 or 2 wherein said hard disks have a diameter of 65mm and said rotating means rotate said disks at a speed of 10,000 RPM.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 78 words
A disk storage system as claimed in any of claims 1, 2 or 3 further comprising: means responsive to each of said rotating means for generating an error signal indicating phase difference between respective rotational positions of each of said disks; and synchronising control means responsive to said error signal for electronically locking the rotational speed and relative positions of said disks whereby data stored across said disk drive units may be simultaneously accessed for reading and recording.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 111 words
A disk storage system as claimed in any of claims 2 to 4, further comprising: disconnect signalling means for detecting the disconnection of any one of said disk drive units from said system and generating a disconnect signal indicating which of said units has been disconnected; connect signalling means for detecting the reconnection of any one of said disk drive units to said system and generating a reconnection signal indicating which of said units has been reconnected; and regeneration control means for reading corresponding portions from the disk drive units which remained connected, regenerating the portions originally resident on said disconnected unit and recording said regenerated portion on said reconnected unit.
