Abstract
Abstract The invention relates to a method of processing requests for the transfer of data from a first data base (40) to a second data base (50) comprising the steps of creating a communications link between the two data bases, and initially transferring from the first data base to the second data base information about the data to be transferred, determining in the second data base the characteristics of the information, and subsequently transferring the required data if the characteristics of the information satisfy predetermined requirements. According to the invention the method is characterised in that the transferred information comprises a description (44) of the data formats used in the first data base, and a description (45) of the data base language used in the first data base. The invention also relates to apparatus for implementing the above method.

A method for processing requests from a receiver database (50) to a different-type server database (40), comprising the steps of a) creating a communication link between the receiver and server databases, b) communicating to each database a description of the data formats used by the other database, c) communicating to each database a description of the database language used by the other database, and d) sending at least two processing requests from the receiver database to the server database, such requests containing user data and descriptions thereof, without resending descriptions of the machine environment or database language.

A system for establishing a data conversion context at a first computer system (50) which receives data from a second computer system (40) dissimilar to the first computer system, comprising (a) descriptors in the first and second computer systems defining machine and language characteristics, (b) means in the first computer system for obtaining, from said descriptors, first and second descriptors (44, 45) which respectively define machine and language characteristics for said second computer system, (c) means in the second computer system for building a data descriptor (47) describing characteristics of data which is native to the second computer system, (d) means for communicating said data descriptor and said data which is native to the second computer system to the first computer system, and (e) means in the first computer system for combining the first, second, and data descriptors to produce a context for converting the data which is native to the second computer system.
