Abstract

Abstract An article, such as a lancet, comprises a body portion (12) and a needle portion (14) tapering to a point (16), said body and needle portions being unitary and moulded of a thermoplastic polymer selected from liquid crystalline polymers, modified acrylic polymers, impact resistant polystyrene polymers, impact resistant polycarbonates, and polyurethanes having a hard segment of about 95% or greater. Methods for producing such articles as described.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
A lancet as claimed in claim 2 comprising a grasping portion and a needle portion having a point, said grasping and needle portions being unitary and moulded of a thermoplastic, modified acrylic polymer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 11 words
An article as claimed in claim 1 which is a needle.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
An article as claimed in claim 1 which is a catheter insertion device.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 13 words
An article as claimed in claim 1 which is a needle insertion device.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 36 words
An article comprising a needle portion having a point, said article being moulded of a thermoplastic polymer having a durometer hardness of at least 70 Shore D and an impact strength of at least 1.0 ft-lbs/in.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 112 words
A method for preparing a plastic article having a point comprising: a) heating a thermoplastic polymer selected from liquid crystalline polymers, modified acrylic polymers, impact resistant polystyrenes, impact resistant polycarbonates, and polyurethanes having a hard segment of about 90% or greater to give a melt; b) passing the melt through an orifice whereby the melt decreases in viscosity; c) directing the melt of reduced viscosity into a mould which includes a sharp point whereby the melt completely fills the mould; d) cooling the melt in the mould whereby the melt solidifies to an article having the shape of the mould including a sharp point; and e) removing the article from the mould.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 26 words
A method as claimed in claim 8 in which the article is a lancet and the thermoplastic polymer is an impact resistant thermoplastic modified acrylic polymer.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 82 words
A method for preparing a thermoplastic plastic article having a point comprising: a) directing a melt of a thermoplastic polymer having a durometer hardness of at least 70 Shore D and an impact strength of at least 1.0 ft-lbs in. into a mould which includes a point whereby the melt completely fills the mould; b) cooling the melt in the mould whereby the melt solidifies to an article having the shape of the mould; and c) removing the article from the mould.
