Abstract
Abstract The device connects a current connection disposed in the steering column of a motor vehicle to a current connection which is arranged in the steering wheel hub and which moves therewith. The electrical connection is made by a flat conductor cable which is diposed in the steering wheel hub and which is wound in a spiral. For mechanically strengthening the cable is enclosed in plastic sheathings in its transitional regions between the spiral and the ends which extend away at 90° The sheathings are also of such a configuration that they are located to a housing which accommodates the spiral.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim
141 words
Electrical cable assembly for use in a connector for electrically coupling a stationary connection to a movable connection which is rotatable with respect to the stationary connection, characterized by an elongate flat cable (22) having plural elongate transversely spaced conductors (24) surrounded by a cable insulator (32), said flat cable (22) having opposed ends for coupling respectively to said stationary connection and said movable connection and a central region (26) to provide for relative movement between said ends, said cable insulator further including a plurality of openings (30) therethrough between said transversely spaced conductors (24); and a protective sheathing (32) formed over a portion of said ends of said cable and adjacent portions of said central region (26), said protective sheathing (32) extending into and through said openings (30) in said cable insulator to thereby provide strain relief to said cable.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
40 words
Cable assembly according to claim 1, characterized in that said central region (26) of said cable is wound in a spiral and said ends extend therefrom at opposed right angles with bent portions of the cable forming said right angles.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
21 words
Cable assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2, characterized in that said sheathing (32) is formed over said bent portions.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
33 words
Cable assembly according to anyone of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that said cable insulator (32) is longitudinally slit between adjacent ones of said spaced conductors (24) at one of said ends.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
18 words
Cable assembly according to claim 1, characterized in that said sheathing (32) is formed of injection molded plastic.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
138 words
Electrical cable assembly for use in a connector for electrically coupling a stationary connection to a movable connection which is rotatable with respect to the stationary connection, characterized by an elongate flat cable (22) having plural elongate, transversely spaced conductors (24) supported by a cable insulator (32), said flat cable having opposed ends for electrical connection to said stationary connection and to said movable connection, and a central region (26) therebetween which provides for relative movement between said ends; and a protective sheathing (32) formed over a portion of said ends of said flat cable and adjacent portions of said central region (26), said sheathing (32) including a series of longitudinally spaced annular portions (38), adjacent annular portions (38) being separated by an opening (40) which provides for longitudinal flexing of said flat cable at said ends thereof.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
28 words
Electrical cable assembly according to claim 6, characterized in that said adjacent annular portions (38) are joined by a limb portion (42) which longitudinally spans said opening (40).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
71 words
Electrical cable assembly according to claim 6 or claim 7, characterized in that said flat cable includes opposed flat planar surfaces and opposed edge surfaces and wherein said limb portion (42) joining at least two adjacent annular portions (38) lies along said one of said flat planar surfaces and a further limb portion (42) joins a further at least two adjacent annular portions (38) and lies along one said edge surface.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
58 words
Electrical cable assembly according to claim 6, characterized in that said cable central region (26) is wound in a spiral and said ends extend therefrom at opposed right angles with bent portions (34, 36) thereof forming said right angles and wherein said sheathing (32) is formed over an extent of said spiral and said bent portions (34, 36).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
26 words
Electrical cable assembly according to anyone of claims 6 to 9, characterized in that said sheathing openings (30) are excluded at said bent portions (34, 36).
