Abstract

Abstract A process for producing a surface-coated blade member for cutting tools, including the steps of preparing a cermet substrate, containing 70 to 95% by weight of carbo-nitride as a hard phase-constituting component represented by the formula (Ti x M y )(C u N v ) wherein M is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of metals in groups IV A , V A and VI A of the Periodic Table except for titanium and x, y, u and v are molar ratios which satisfy relations of 0.5≦x≦0.95, 0.05≦y≦0.5, 0.2≦u≦0.8, 0.2≦v≦0.8, x+y-1 and u+v=1, and balance one or two metals selected from the group consisting of cobalt and nickel as a binder component, and forming at least one layer of titanium carbo-nitride by a chemical vapor deposition process on the cermet substrate at a temperature of 700 to 900°C, using reaction gas containing acetonitrile.
