Abstract

Abstract Composition and process for inflating an automobile or aircraft safety crash bag comprising igniting at elevated pressure a pyrotechnic material comprising at least one tetrazole or triazole compound containing hydrogen in the molecule, at least one oxygen containing oxidizer compound, and at least one metal oxide to generate a gas which is admixed with air by means of an aspirating venturi and thereafter utilized to inflated the crash bag.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 73 words
A pyrotechnic composition suitable for use in generating substantially non-toxic combustion products including a gas to inflate a crash bag, said composition comprising a mixture of at least one tetrazole compound containing hydrogen in the molecule or a triazole compound containing hydrogen in the molecule, and at least one oxygen-containing oxidizer compound and at least one metal oxide so as to produce, upon combustion, a substantially non-toxic primary gas mixture and filterable solids.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 51 words
A composition according to claim 1, wherein said oxygen-containing oxidizer compound is at least one alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium oxygen-containing oxidizer salt and said metal oxide is at least one of silicon dioxide, iron oxide, cobalt oxide, nickel oxide, chromium oxide, aluminum oxide, boron oxide and vanadium oxide.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
A composition according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said tetrazole compound is a hydrogen-containing tetrazole, an aminotetrazole or metal salt thereof, or a mixture thereof.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 29 words
A composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said oxygen containing oxidizer is at least one alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium nitrate or perchlorate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 48 words
A composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said primary gas mixture, upon dilution with 1 to 4 volumes of air per volume of said primary gas mixture, comprises, by volume, 2 to 10% carbon dioxide, less than 4% hydrogen, and less than 50% water.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 61 words
A composition according to any one of the preceding claims, which comprises an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt of a hydrogen-containing tetrazole at a concentration of 20 to 60% by wt., an oxygen-containing oxidizer compound in an amount of 20 to 80% by wt., and a metal oxide in an amount of 2 to 20% by wt.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
A composition according to claim 6, which comprises 40% by wt. of the sodium salt of tetrazole, 50% by wt. sodium nitrate, and 10% by wt. of silicon dioxide.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
A composition according to claim 6, which comprises 30% by wt of 5-aminotetrazole, 54% by wt. of potassium nitrate and 16% by wt. of silicon dioxide.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 32 words
A composition according to claim 6, which comprises 21% by wt. of 5-aminotetrazole, 35% by wt. of ammonium perchlorate, 41% by wt. of potassium nitrate and 3.2% by wt. of silicon dioxide.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 107 words
A method for inflating an automobile or aircraft safety crash bag containing a pyrotechnic composition as claimed in anyone of the preceding claims which comprises: (a) burning said pyrotechnic composition at elevated pressure so as to produce, upon combustion, a substantially non-toxic primary gas mixture and filterable solids; and (b) diluting said primary gas mixture with air to produce a substantially non-toxic final gas mixture by passing said primary gas mixture through at least one venturi so as to aspirate said air, whereby said crash bag, when inflated, contains a final gas mixture comprising 1 to 4 volumes of air per volume of said primary gas mixture
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 20 words
A gas mixture suitable for inflating an automobile or aircraft safety crash bag obtainable by the process of claim 10.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 20 words
An aircraft or automobile safety crash bag containing a composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 9.
