Abstract

Abstract An article of manufacture comprises a thermoplastic composite including a reinforcing fiber in a poly(arylene sulfide) matrix comprising an uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin and a cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin. This produces a composite having an improved combination of toughness and resin/fiber adhesion.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 32 words
An article of manufacture, comprising a thermoplastic composite including a reinforcing fiber in a poly(arylene sulfide) matrix comprising an uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin and a cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 85 words
An article of manufacture, comprising a thermoplastic composite including a continuous reinforcing fiber embedded in a poly(arylene sulfide) matrix comprising an uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin and a cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin wherein said uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin gives more toughness to said matrix than with said cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin alone and further, wherein said cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin gives better adhesion between said matrix and said fiber than with said uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin alone.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 51 words
An article as defined in claim 1 or 2, wherein: said uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin is made by a polymerization process utilizing trichlorobenzene; and said cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin is cured by heating in air at a temperature below the melting temperature of said cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 69 words
An article as defined in claim 1 or 2, wherein said uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin has a melt flow rate within the range from about 20 grams per ten minutes to about 65 grams per ten minutes and wherein said cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin has a melt flow rate within the range from about 50 grams per ten minutes to about 100 grams per ten minutes.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
An article as defined in claim 1, wherein both said resins are poly(phenylene sulfide) resins, in particular wherein said cured poly(phenylene sulfide) resin includes lithium carbonate.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 57 words
An article as defined in claim 2, wherein: said uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin is an uncured, branched, high molecular weight poly(phenylene sulfide) resin; and said cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin is a cured, branched, high molecular weight poly(phenylene sulfide) resin, in particular wherein said cured, branched, high molecular weight poly(phenylene sulfide) resin includes lithium carbonate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 40 words
An article as defined in one of the preceding claims, wherein said matrix comprises about 75 percent by weight of said uncured, high molecular weight poly(phenylene sulfide) resin and about 25 percent by weight of said cured poly(phenylene sulfide) resin.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 66 words
A method of making a thermoplastic composite having improved toughness and resin/fiber adhesion, comprising combining uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin and cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin with a continuous reinforcing fiber so that a thermoplastic composite having improved toughness due to the uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin and further having improved resin/fiber adhesion due to the cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin is thereby formed.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method as defined in claim 8, further comprising preparing the uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin using trichlorobenzene.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method as defined in claim 8 or 9, further comprising preparing the cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin by heating uncured poly(arylene sulfide) resin in air.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 42 words
A method as defined in claims 8 to 10, wherein said step of combining includes: blending the uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin and the cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin; and pulling the fiber through the blend in a pultrusion impregnation process.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 43 words
A method as defined in claims 8 to 10, wherein said step of combining includes: coating the fiber with the cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin; and pulling the coated fiber through the uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin in a pultrusion impregnation process.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 42 words
A method as defined in claims 8 to 12, wherein: said uncured, high molecular weight poly(arylene sulfide) resin is uncured, branched, high molecular weight poly(phenylene sulfide) resin; and said cured poly(arylene sulfide) resin is cured, branched, high molecular weight poly(phenylene sulfide) resin.
