Abstract

Abstract When a new virtual connection is set up via an ATM line, a check is carried out to ascertain whether the still available free transmission power is adequate for the transmission power required for the virtual connection which is to be newly set up. Every subscriber reports in advance its mean bit rate and its peak bit rate, which values must not then be exceeded. When a new connection is set up, the new total load is calculated from the mean bit rates and the peak bit rates. This is compared with the relevant overall peak bit rate which is permissible for the ATM line concerned; the required new virtual connection is set up only if said total load does not exceed said overall peak bit rate. The calculation entails subtraction, multiplication, addition, root extraction and further technically implemented operations. <IMAGE>
