Abstract
Abstract In a method for high speed data transfer between a user operated PC (12) and a remote PC (16), a link is established between the two PCs (12,16), and a data file is transferred from the user operated PC (12) to an interfacing device (14) connected to the user operated PC (12). The file is then formatted in the interfacing device (14), and transmitted therefrom to the remote PC (16) over an ISDN line (34). A second data file may be transferred from the remote PC (16) to the user operated PC (12) contemporaneously with the transferring, formatting and transmitting of the other data file.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim
90 words
A method for data transfer between a user operated PC (14) and a remote PC (16), characterized by the steps of: establishing a link between said user operated PC (12) and remote PC (16); transferring a data file from said user operated PC (12) to an interfacing device (14), said interfacing device (14) being connected to said user operated PC (12) and including a dedicated processor (32); formatting said file in said interfacing device (14); and transmitting said file therefrom to said remote PC (16) over a communication line (34).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
115 words
A method according to claim 1, characterized in that said establishing step includes the steps of: providing a link request to said user operated PC (12); transferring said link request from said user operated PC (12) to said interfacing device (14); formatting said link request in said interfacing device (14), and transmitting said formatted request to said remote PC (16) over said communication line (34); receiving a link established signal transmitted from said remote PC (16) to said interfacing device (14); transferring said link established signal from said interfacing device (14) to said user operated PC (12); and displaying a link established message on a video monitor (36) connected to said user operated PC (12).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
62 words
A method according to claim 2, characterized in that said transferring step includes: opening said data file in said user operated PC (12); providing a transfer request, including the size of said file, to said interfacing device (14); transmitting said transfer request from said interfacing device (14) to said remote PC (16); and receiving a transfer request acknowledgement from said remote PC.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
27 words
A method according to claim 3, characterized by the step of: after receiving said transfer request acknowledgement, displaying a transfer started message on said video monitor (36).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
116 words
A method according to claim 3 or claim 4, characterized in that said user operated PC (12) includes a counter (22) having an initial number of credits, and in that, after receiving said transfer request acknowledgement, said transferring step further includes the steps of: verifying the availability of credits; transferring said data file from said user operated PC (12) to said interfacing device (14) a block at a time; and decrementing said counter (22) for each such block transferred; repeating said verifying, transferring and decrementing steps until no credits are available or said transfer is complete; receiving a credit update from said interfacing device (14); and incrementing said counter (22) in response to said credit update.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
32 words
A method according to claim 5, characterized in that said transferring step includes the steps of: calculating the percentage of said file transferred; and displaying said percentage on said video monitor (36).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
66 words
A method according to claim 6, characterized in that said transferring step further includes, after said file has been completely transferred to said interfacing device (14), the steps of closing said file; transmitting an end of transfer request to said remote PC (16); receiving an end of transfer request acknowledgement from said remote PC (16); and displaying a transfer complete message on said video monitor (36).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
35 words
A method according to claim 7, characterized by the steps of: transferring a second data file from said remote PC (16) to said user operated PC (12) contemporaneously with said transferring, formatting and transmitting steps.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
75 words
A method according to claim 8, characterized in that said step of transferring said second data file includes: receiving a transfer request, which includes the size of said second data file, from said remote PC (16); verifying that said user operated PC (12) has sufficient memory space to store said second data file; transmitting a transfer request acknowledgement to said remote PC (16); and displaying a data reception started message on said video monitor (36).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
52 words
A method according to claim 9, characterized by the steps of, after displaying said message, receiving blocks of data from said second data file into said interfacing device (14); checking said data blocks, in said interfacing device (14), for transmission errors; and transferring valid data blocks to said user operated PC (12).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
33 words
A method according to claim 10, characterized by the steps of: after transferring valid data blocks, calculating the percentage of said second data file received; and displaying said percentage on said video monitor.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
42 words
A method according to claim 11, characterized by the steps of: receiving a transfer end request from said remote PC (16); transmitting a transfer end acknowledgement to said remote PC (16); and displaying a reception completed message on said video monitor (36).
