System for the compression of digital images belonging to a sequence of images using adaptive quantisation with psycho-visual transformation function
Abstract
The field of the invention is that of the compression of digital images belonging to a sequence of images. The invention applies in particular to the transmission of images on digital channels, as well as to image storage devices. More specifically, the invention aims to provide an image compression system taking into account a psychovisual criterion for the signal compression step by quantification of transformed coefficients of blocks cut out from the image. The system of the invention is of the type comprising a module for coding picture blocks by mathematical transformation cooperating with a module for quantifying the value of each coefficient of the transformed picture blocks, characterized in that said quantization module comprises means for calculating (59,60) the number of quantization levels (55) of the coefficients (53) as a function of psychovisual information, such as amplitude of movement information (54) associated with said image block .
