Abstract In order to adapt the throughput of the transmission to the unknown quality of the transmission path, a test message is transmitted (101), the content of which is that of the start of the document to be transmitted and, on reception, the content of the test message received is saved, and the error rate in this message is determined by a method insensitive to its content. In the event of acceptance (102) just the remainder of the document is transmitted (103). In the event of refusal (102), another test message, of lower throughput, is sent (105, 101), and so on. The invention makes it possible to reduce the total duration of transmission of a document by fax. <IMAGE>
