Abstract

Abstract Medical treatment apparatus for sustaining the vitality of an organ in the gastrointestinal tract by catheterisation including improvements in catheter placement, ischemia detection, and oxygenation. A catheter (12) has a chamber (18), the wall of which is freely permeable to gas but poorly permeable to liquid. Aspiration means and an oxygen perfusion source (14) are selectively connectable with the chamber to permit oxygenation of the organ or obtaining a sample of CO₂ gas from the organ. A disclosed embodiment of the catheter has magnetically responsive structure at its top (120) and a device for aid in placement of the catheter has an electromagnet (124) cooperative with the magnetic tip (120).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 153 words
Apparatus for selective monitoring oxygenation of a tubular internal organ of the gastrointestinal tract comprising a catheter having a closed cylindrical walled chamber (26) on a tube (16) for disposition against the lumen of the organ, said tube having an entrance (34) to and an exit (36) from said chamber, the wall (20) of said chamber comprising a material which is freely permeable to gas but poorly permeable to liquid, an oxygen perfusion source (14) connectable to the tube (16), an aspirating fluid source (104), and means (106) for selectively connecting said oxygen perfusion source (14) and said aspirating fluid source (104) to said catheter so that when the oxygen perfusion source is connected to the catheter, oxygenation of the organ can be performed, and when the aspirating fluid source is connected to the catheter aspirating fluid an be introduced to obtain a sample of CO₂ gas from the lumen of the organ.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 153 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 58 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the catheter tube is soft and pliable for introduction into the gastrointestinal tract, the chamber being in communication with said tube so that fluid can be introduced into said chamber via said tube, a separate lumen (178) being provided through the catheter for guiding of the catheter (170) on a guidewire (174).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
Apparatus according to claim 6, also including a removable guide wire (174) for threading through the catheter (170).
